Renak comes from the eastern part of Germany, somewhere near Chemnitz
http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Renak_derailleurs.html
Right now now only have hub dynamo's / dynamo hubs and they are located in northern Germany, Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein
renak was the biggest hub manufactor in the GDR and produced near Karl-Marx Stadt.
diamant frames where build in in Karl-Marx Stadt now Chemnitz.
They where build in the same special purpose machinery manufacture like textima sprint frames.(Michael Hübner rode textima in the 1990's sprint finals)
the race frames didn't come from the normal factory. -

I've just picked up a Cougar frame with a Campy headset from a mate. Does anyone out there know much about this company or their frames? I've googled and nowt turned-up apart from the odd pic on ebay. It's light as a feather so thinking Alum frame??
-
• #16288
Cougar were a Liverpool based builder who very very popular in the early 90s. A lot of their frames were made by Terry Dolan, who worked for them.
A few people on here have them, i.e. aidan for one I think.
Is the frame tig welded or lugged?
-
• #16289
Cheers andyp... It's lugged. Also has Cougar logo on the top of each fork
-
• #16290
It's steel if it's lugged then. I'm not sure when they went out of business so it's difficult to say what steel tubeset it used, presuming there is no sticker on the seat tube?
-
• #16291
No info stickers on the tubes sadly, just Cougar logo stickers all over the gaff. It sounds very thin, when tapped, to be steel but I know nadda. Is that the general rule... lugged = steel? Hope it is steel as the seatpost is jammed and may need to get my chemistry set out to dissolve the bugger! It's my first project so wanted to get some info on frame before I jumped in...
-
• #16292
Yes, the general rule is lugged = steel. Sheldon Brown has some good tips on removing a stuck seat post. Good luck with it.
-
• #16293
No, there is also a bunch of lugged alu and carbonfibre frames, but when you see it, it's obvious, normally.
Also, a magnet will tell you more...
The qty of stainless steel frames is rather small and even stainless steel may sometimes stick to a magnet. -
