First time buying clips...

Posted on
  • I've read around on a couple of old threads and settled on a pair of
    MKS Sylvan pedals - £23 including p+p
MKS toe clips (Large) - £11 including p+p
    -£34

I'm looking to spend £50 or under, could any point me in the right direction of what straps i should get?

    Thanks, Jack.

  • Not Toshi then.

  • if its your first time then some half decent straps ala christophe or similar. cheap enough to buy two pairs and fashion some doublers...

  • christophe single straps, I think you can get them off SJS for about £8.

  • the sylvans and mks clips are a lot cheaper than that here

  • If you're in London Tour de Ville are selling laminated leather double straps for £30 a pair. I've got a set and they're ace. I heard of someone (Condor?) selling something similar for £25 or something but I'm probably way off on where to get them.

The way that it's phrased on there makes it sound like they're selling a single pedal and a single clip.
or is this just me being an idiot?

  • BLB do some double leather straps for either £20 or £25, or 14 have Odge straps for £30 (i think). There are probably cheaper places to shop, mind.

  • not sure about the blb double straps, i've had some for two weeks and they are slipping daily...

  • Brixton Cycles have doubles from £25 for leather black

  • Sweet. Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to be in central London on Saturday.
Although, i've had so many recommendations I don't really know where I should go haha.
Someone wrote in some other forum that you should go for doubles your first time, so i think i'll spend the extra cash to get doubles instead.

Also, any help on the 'on-one' dilemma?

  • nah, gotta be a pair.

I've been using BLB straps for about 4 months, no issues with slippage here.

  • they are definately being sold in pairs at on-one
or they were when i bought mine at least

  • Don't forget patience, you'll feel like you'll never get used to riding clips especially trying to put your feet in your pedals.

give it at least a month time and you'll be able to strap in and out easily without even looking.

  • I'll most probably get myself some BLB double straps then.
    Thanks guys.

  • be careful, cheap strap isn't exactly strong in the long term.

i suggest you get SMALL double gate clips and with double straps. I don't know your shoe size, but the large clips are really big. They always increase toe overlap significantly, and usually (depending on your shoe type and size) place the pedal pretty far under your foot. I am *not *saying take my advice as absolutely correct... i saying I suggest you consider going small, even if you think your foot is big.

Also, skimping on straps is a really poor place to try to save money on your ride. Even if i was riding a beater, made from parts i had laying around, i'd still get good straps and clips. It's all up to you, but you get what you pay for, and unfortunately, there aren't any "middle ground" straps that i know of. You either get total stretchy unreliable crap , or you get the best what will last for ever and never need your attention.

Word of advice. skimping on straps is a really poor place to try to save money on your ride. From there on out, it's all up to you. you get what you pay for, and unfortunately, there aren't any "middle ground" straps that i know of. You either get shit, or you get the best.

could this be resolved by getting good quality single straps?

  • i edited above a bit regarding clip size,

Anyway, no i don't think so. I spent years on single straps, then i went to clipless on my fixed gear, and now i'm back to straps with the MKS doubles. It's nowhere near as nice as clipless, but it's worlds better than any single strap and i get to wear normal shoes when i'm tooling around. They just hug your feet and are really comfy. WIth singles it really feel like you are hanging on for dear life sometimes when you're trying to stop quickly or going down a hill, etc...

+1 for the laminated exustars at TdV, they are the improved version not displayed on the exustar website as yet, don't get the cheap condor ones.

  • It's said at alot of places that the mks large clips are suitable for size 8-10 mens, extra large for 10+.
    I'm size 9.
I'll probably get some blb double straps for the time being until i can afford some better ones.

  • not sure about the blb double straps, i've had some for two weeks and they are slipping daily...

had a word and bartosh (sp?) at blb suggested rigging the straps upside down, ie ends through the clips first. running loads better now....nice

  • Anybody ever try the new style Hold Fast straps? Might be easier to get in/out of than the large toe clips, like Jersey said. I probably read about them here...
