1" to 1 1/8" stem shim danger?

Posted on
  • I've done a quick search on this and only found one post. Was in lbs the other day looking for one and he told me, the only thing you can shim 'safely' is the saddle. Stem shims are 'extremely dangerous'?

Anyone here have any failures using a stem shim before I risk life and limb?

  • rubbish, as long as it is securely clamped, it will be fine.

  • you are talking about the stem to forks?
i have one on my bike and there is absolutely no problem.
i wouldn't shim the bars though.

  • there are purpose built shims made for stems, handlebars and seatposts available. they are all perfectly safe when used and installed properly

  • Great stuff, yep it's stem to fork shim and threadless so as horatio linked to just the small collar shim. Job done...I'm ready to risk it so.

  • i'll be risking it too soon... shim win!

  • You should name and shame your LBS. I used a shim on an aheadset for at least 5 years and I've lived to tell the tale.

  • Christ! ITM even sell stems with shims included.

Do not go back to your LBS.

  • Do you need one? I have one in my cupboard at home. Gratis.

  • do you remeber gratis points in packs of fags?

did anyone ever use them for anything other than roach?

  • Thanks Dov, ordered one from t'internet earlier, I'm in Ireland anyhow. Yep won't be heading back to that shop anytime soon.

He was one of those young cocky fooks who exaggerated everything... "you could be cycling along one day and it'll just give way when you try to turn" I was waiting for the sound effect.....boooossssssshhhhhh!

I remember you needed to smoke 40,000,000 to get a microwave.

  • "you could be cycling along one day and it'll just give way when you try to turn"

That happened to me last week when I forgot to tight my stem bolts :s

    Most unnerving!

As do Deda and Ritchey. The stem/steerer shim seems like the safest one of the three mentioned, as the axial load is taken by the headset/top cap and there's very little torque load.

  • it's best if it's a split shim, shimshiminy sharroo!

  • I remember you needed to smoke 40,000,000 to get a microwave.

    I remember that too!

Many years ago, I moved into a student flat and we got a full set of pans, microwave, fondue set, a kettle, a toaster and a ken Hom wok and cookery book, from a pile of gratis points left in the flat.

All we were missing was a handy set of steak knives and a cuddly toy.

    Shut that door.

  • I used a piece of copper pipe to shim my stem once as I was desperate to get the bike on the road and needed a shim when all the shops were shut. Worked ok for about 2 days then began to slip. I do not recommend this as copper is very malleable and squashes. I ordered a proper Ali shim and it works a treat. I've even shimmed a quill on a beater with a piece of steel food can. Was rock solid.

  • yeah the alu can trick is popular with that german dude at druid cycles, he shimed my seatpost once with one, didnt slip for two weeks, then bought a correct seatpost, but prob wouldve kept holding for tiiimme. aint nothing wrong with shiming. also, anyone have a stem shim to sell.
