Witcomb build

  • i bought a 70's witcomb off the bay a while back and i am looking for some advice regarding wheels. It came with gears and i wish to keep it that way.

The back wheel seems to be tubular, sorry not very good with this sort of stuff. Measures 25 inches the back wheel but will really be needing 2 new wheels, i can take the back hub off as it is a campy.

Any thoughts on classic rims and what size should i be looking for.

    thanks

  • if you want to find out what rims size you need, just look at the tyres - it said so there.

watch out though, some makes have been known to lie:
Other makes, such as american ones, have been known to deliberately mark down the sizes as they think it feels slimming.
British makes have been known to be quite reserved about their size, and if you get a BNP tyre, it will only fit on british built rims.
Aussie makes on the other hand are loud and brash about sizing, but have the inevitable issue of at some point coming unstuck and ending up in a parisian canal.
    Just a friendly warning, like.

  • nothing on the tyre as it is so old , worthless !!

  • yeah +1 ^ even though theyre the funniest op, 2nd posts for ages, still laughing........

  • Sensible reply:
    700c, no wider than 23.
Have a look at the Mavic site and pick some rims you quite like.

  • thanks bluequinn

be easier if some people could follow by example

  • probably has 27" rims. 700c are slightly smaller so you might want to check that the drop on the brakes is long enough if you switch to 700c. 27" will look better if the frame was built with that size in mind but 700c will be much easier to source tyres for, more choice of rim etc.

  • I assumed 700s because the existing wheels are tubs.

  • yes the tyres are vittoria champion on tubs, i take it these are 700

so now i need a front wheel and a rim for the back as i have a hub then im rolling ..

well if i can find anyone to put it all together, any chance of someone who can do this for me?
