If you're after Soul, Reggae/Dub, Funk, bit of disco/boogie then the best record shop(imo) is Music Emporium on Brixton Hill, I've been going there for years.
It's a right mess but I've literally spent 4/5hrs at a time in there sifting through 1,000's of 12"s, LPs....and you can go downstairs and listen to them all on headphones so you can check before you buy :-)
