  • If you want to take your riding to another level a coach can be very helpful.

I started racing bikes about 28 years ago (god I feel old!), and I've been exposed to many different coaches in those years. I would rather have a coach that was less "qualified" but took more time to understand me as an athlete and how to get the most out of me, than one who was highly qualified in training techinque but never bothered to take the time get to know me.

Racing bikes takes more than just training, it takes a lot knowledge and inner selfbelief.

There are a few coaches in the UK that I have come across that have very bad people skills and as a result are not very good coaches even tho they might be well "qualified".

What you need to do is find a person you respect or look up to and one who does more than just recite what's in the training manual they studied to become a coach. A coach should be more than someone who just tells to what training you need to be doing and when. A good coach takes the time to understand who you are, how to motivate you and how to make you think about what you are doing. They learn from you as much as you learn from them.

That being said and having worked with Lee this past Sunday and having been around him on other occasions I would say his has very good people skills, good knowledge, a lot of experience and is happy to share all of that and get involved with a rider.

There were many simple bits of advice/input I got from him on Sunday that made my day at the track that much more productive. That to me is worth far more than the £30 I paid to be there.

The best way forward is to have a chat with him, tell him what those goals are, talk about why you want to achieve them. If you get a responce that you feel is realistic and honest and you feel you can get on with him (and he's willing to take you on) then go for it.

Remember, Lee is very much focused on Track Sprinting, that is his passion and the dicipline you'll get the most reward from working with him. If you want to up your game on the road he will help you to a point, but you might be better off looking for a coach that is more focused on that dicipline.

    Just my 2pence...
