Do you think bike frame size is less important these days?

  • It may seem like a silly question, and i know bike companies are all making those shitty compact frames, but it seems that the advent of mass produced bikes has allowed longer seatposts and stems that allow for more frame sizes to fit more people. I am 6'2 and a bit, and ride two bikes, one i built which is 53cm c-t and a fuji track which is 61cm not sure if its c-c or c-t, but i find the fuji considerably more uncomfortable in almost everyway, bar the fact the smaller frame has a slight toe overlap problem. What do you think?

  • Very important.

  • 6'2" on a 53 C-T frame?? WTF??

You are Seb and I claim my £5

  • i've got a variety of sizes and i like them all equally as much
depends on what you're using the bike for
    i'm kinda glad my bmx isn't a a 58cm frame it'd look silly

  • it's the effective top tube that matters (as long as you have enough standover) it sounds like both bikes are the wrong size for you.
a good fit is essential IMHO but a lot of people ride bikes that are the wrong size as the colour or make of frame is more important. for them the discomfort is worth putting up with.

  • maybe i just have tiny legs. lol

  • It depends how long you plan on riding a bike for. In the short term you can get away with riding a frame that isn't the right size for you but in the long term it can lead to all kinds of physical problems, usually involving knees or the spine. I'd rather avoid that.

  • see the fuji is well uncomfortable, but the smaller frame is lovely, obviously i have the stem and the seatpost at the correct level etc. surely that will compensate slightly for the frame size? especially using a 125mm long stem with almost no drop?

  • nobody can make any judgment of your bikefit without seeing you sat on the bike and pedaling it.
but it sounds like you have 2 bikes that don't fit you or one of them is set up like a nodders shopper bike that's fine for riding a couple of miles.
if you just want to ride to the shops and back i wouldn't worry about it.

  • see the fuji is well uncomfortable

Uncomfortable in what way? And how have you got your seat-post, saddle, and stem set up? What sort of clearance do you have in terms of stand-over?

  • "stand-over"

the most irrelevant measurement on a bike

  • I am 5"11 with shortish legs and find 56cm just right, 53cm is too small for you

  • Frame size is as important as it's always been; even with compact framesets (which aren't shitty).

  • i'm 6ft1 and find 56cm just right (as did the person fitting me to my bike). but i'm me, not you.

these statements of i'm this and ride that are particular to you and only give a suggestion as to what may or may not fit another person. so not much use at all really because if we all put down our height and bike size it still wouldn't help somebody get a bike that fits them.

  • I'm 5"5 and have a bike coming that's 50CM and if that's wrong I'm blaming everyone here.

    :D

  • There are loads of dozy fuckers on here riding massive bikes for no reason.

    Don't ride a 61 unless you're 6' 4" or have the torso of a chimpanzee

  • For a 6'2 person that required a frame size of 58cm to 60cm.

Also the trouble with stem compensating the short top tube is that the longer the stem the more relaxed the steering will feel, so it's not always the best solution.

  • look up bike whisperer, cyclefit etc

fit is important if you are riding any distance or very fast

cycling should not hurt or cause excessive pain afterwards

  • cycling should not hurt or cause excessive pain afterwards

1+, you also should feel like you can do almost infinity miles on your bike if it fit you correctly.

  • both my bikes are roughly 23" (yes I will go old skool)
    I am 6'6"

they are too small, but the raleigh (old skool frame, quill stem etc)
feels more upright than my Giant TCR which i feel massively streched out on
but neither are really the right height...

    Custom frame ftw :)

    saves up

Your bike is the wrong size though.

  • size does matter, no matter what gentle reassurances hippy's mum may have given you.

  • Your bike is the wrong size though.

it's not. 56.5 effective top tube. 120stem. spot on.
but then i use the drops a lot of the time and very rarely the tops.

  • I knew you'd bite. Stretchy dropenger. :P

  • So ideally for a 5ft 5 midget me 51-53 is ok?

On the lookout for a build after a injury from skateboarding
