  • I doubt you'll get anywhere if it says no refunds, although trade description act or some such. I dunno, good luck either way

  • If you install an ISO crank on a J.I.S. spindle,
    it will sit about
    4.5 mm farther out
than it would on an ISO spindle of the same length.

Confersely, if you install a J.I.S. crank on an ISO spindle,
it will wind up about 4.5 mm farther in
than it would on a J.I.S spindle of the same length.

    "sheldon Brown"

i dont think that's whats wrong.

  • I think I shall start a paypal dispute, I don't see that because he's been fucked over that gives him the right to fuck me over. Probably haven't got a leg to stand on.

Too right you should start a PayPal dispute. Make a nuisance of yourself, even if it's just to cause the seller some well-deserved grief.

A no refunds policy is fine where it applies to folk who buy on a whim and then decide they want their money back. But it doesn't wash here. He let you think the cranks were useable when, in fact, they're not. That's an item which is significantly not as described. I mean, I couldn't sell you a television on the basis that it's in good used condition and then refuse you a refund when you discover it doesn't work.

Fight the good fight! He's a chancer who deserves to be vanquished.

  • Yes, start a dispute. Over on the cycling jersey thread someone posted a link to eBays rules, it states that the item should be fit for purpose, whether it be new or used.

  • they are knackered, he is totally wrong selling them. he must have known since he seems experienced himself.

    dispute it totally

  • BB spindles are fucking epically tough.

    .

  • whoa. I haven't seen a pic of the actual crank hole. it would have to be massively deformed to let the BB through that much. And just because he sent you a bb, that doesn't mean that was the one he was using, or that it's not a JIS/ISO issue.

If the BB is ISO, what you're seeing is exactly what you should see as ISO is longer and thinner.

though, if he's been running these on an ISO bb, the holes will be fucked and you should raise a paypal dispute asap.

  • post a pic of the crank hole, from the bolt side, with light coming through so we can see the inside faces

  • When I explained this at 14 they said that both the Campy Record and Dura Ace would be fine as they were track specific and therefore ISO.

AFAIK this is not true. At least not for DA 7600/7700 etc. Campy is ISO, correct.

    who did you speak to?

  • They weren't specific about model but it was reeled off in the list.. "Sugino 75, Campy, Dura Ace etc" and was followed with "...as far as I know".

Sorry, should have been clearer in my relaying of said conversation.

  • I say dispute it, get as much info together as you can and shove it off to paypal, keep a record of all your correspondence with the guy. If you present your case well you shouldn't have a problem and he won't have a choice, I think you have 30 days from the sale of the item to start a dispute.

  • Cheers Fred, both the BB's I've tried are JIS accordning to Sheldon (Shimano and Ritchey), attached are a couple of snaps including the comparison with the drive side which I think shows significant enlargement.

I think 'fit for purpose' only applies to business sellers, I'm sure private sales are caveat emptor. Still, nothing ventured!

  • Just because its so often said,

    Sugino 75 + Campag Record = ISO
    Dura Ace 7600 = JIS

  • I know it's not going to help (much), but I'm selling DA cranks on that well-known auction site at the mo.
Unused- so no square taper rounding issues.
Hope you manage to get a decent result from the Paypal dispute.

it applies to anyone doing distance selling, as you cannot see them it is there responsibility to point out flaws. This has happended to me before, all you need to do is threaten action in the small claims court and he will only be too happy to give you a refund.

  • You may as well put in a claim, what have you got to lose? The non drive side is clearly fucked which the original seller didn't point out (I'm assuming) so you do have a leg to stand on.

  • please let us know wht happens

  • Shimano BB's are JIS right?

My understanding was that even though Dura Ace is Shimano and therefore the logical assumption would be that they too would be JIS but...

..I went through a similiar thing last week, my Campy BB is ISO and my old cranks were JIS so no go.

When I explained this at 14 they said that both the Campy Record and Dura Ace would be fine as they were track specific and therefore ISO.

My cranks are DA **road **cranks which i run with a single ring.
They have the jis logo stamped on the back.
My understanding was that the road and track cranks were different tapers.
Ergo, DA track cranks will be iso.
Don't know what this means for bmx cranks though, if Shimano even produced DA bmx parts.

However, in the pic of the 2 cranks side by side i'm pretty sure i can see a shelf on the inside of the spider. This to me suggests these are road cranks as the shelf is there to help locate and support an inner chainring and is not present on DA - or really any - track cranks - and presumably would not be present on single chainring use bmx cranks (if they exist) either.

Just because the crank has at some point been fitted to a bmx it does not mean its a genuine bmx part.

  • Thanks for the reply, you are spot on about the shelf, so these have been ex road cranks run on a BMX, which may explain a few things. But it's definitely JIS to JIS so they are screwed.

I've started a paypal dispute, will let you know how it goes.

  • DA track are ISO**

    Dura-Ace**
    Dura-Ace + Sugino 75 + Phil Wood + EAI = hassanr
    Dura-Ace + UN72/110mm + Goldtec + EAI Superstar = Object
    Dura-Ace + UN53/107mm + Dura Ace+Dura Ace= MA3K
    Dura-Ace + UN54/107mm + Dura Ace + Phil = Shinscar
    Dura-Ace + Dura-Ace BB-7610 + Dura-Ace 7600 + EAI = flickwg
    Dura-Ace 7600 + UN54/107mm + Novatec + some shit = Ant
    Dura-Ace FC7710 + Dura Ace BB7710 (109.5) + Dura Ace HB7600 + Dura Ace 1/8 = RPM dura-fuckin-ace.
Dura-Ace all the way baby... = dovoneil
    Dura-Ace FC7710 + Dura Ace BB7710 + Dura Ace HB7600 + EAI = town
    Dura-Ace Old school 151 + UN54+ Miche+ Miche= Eyebrows (slightly off)

  • Just to ressurect this, good news, paypal found in my favour in the dispute and I got all my money back. Item was damaged and therefore significantly not as described. I had to pay for them to be shipped back to the guy with tracking - about £6 from the PO, but apart from that it's all good.

Now I'm having an issue with my new dura ace track cranks that single ring bolts wont tighten down enough. I've tried this with a campy and a sugio ring and they both don't work. I'm using stronglight bolts from velosolo. Are their such a thing as low stack bolts? Should I be using a 1 1/8 ring? Are Dura Ace track cranks only compatible with DA rings?

  • Using a Sugino 75 ring on mine- fine.

  • Is it 11/8? I thinkl that might be my problem.

Step away from the Dura-Ace, take it to a bike shop.

  • Fair point, but I think I have it cracked now. Thanksforyourtime.
