  • Cheers Edy, I managed to take the BB to bits and luckily it's English... (the crankset-side unscrews clockwise, whereas the non-crankset-side is a normal thread). Going to take it up Armourtek this afternoon and get it sprayed, although i've got pretty attached to its beaten-up chipped look... Will post pics as soon as it's done.. prob a couple of weeks yet.

By the way, l like your setup - i know it's unpopular but i actually like that Decathalon seat post - looks from the photo like it matches the thickness of the stem... slick I reckon.

  • edy I am loving your ride! what rims and hubs are they?

  • Took the ol' Pug to the bike shop today. I was going to get the BB changed to bring in the chainset to get a decent chainline with my new wheels (On-One track wheels). I knew my chainline was a long way out. A quick measurement in the shop showed it to be 15mm! As it is, it would be impossible to bring my existing 52t chainset in towards the frame enough to get a chainline as it would hit against the stay. I was using the big ring from the old double that was on the bike when I got it. The BB on it just now does seem to be quite long, but I was wondering whether a ss/fg specific chain set will bring it close enough (with the right BB)? Are they made to sit tighter to the bike frame on a square taper BB? If so, what would you recommed bearing in mind my money is running out!

I could really do without redishing and spacing my brand new wheels, although it might be neccesary.

PapaLazaru, I was wondering if you managed to solve this problem with your chainline? I've got the same set up on the Peugeot I'm converting and not sure whether to keep the existing cranks and try running the 52 T or the 40 T chain ring and what size BB to get..

  • Appreciating the pug-love on this thread.. I've just bought a beaten-up peugeot which i think is from 1979-83 from the head badge. I've started stripping it down but I don't know how to tell if it has a French or English BB? There aren't any numbers on the cup or anywhere else. Any ideas?

The cups unscrew different ways depending on whether its English or French. Also, around that time you may have Swiss (Mines a 1980, with swiss BB cups) which can be recognised by a groove around the outside of the drive side cup (which is threaded in metric but same dirrenction as british) Edscoble left a link at the start of this thread with details..

  • What a great thread!
i have a peugeot that i bought off of of flea bay and am slowly changing parts / upgrading.
i found my little sticker that gave me the model (seen here) thanks to Ed and this thread but i am still looking to find out what size bb it has .. the link to the catalogue above makes no mention of it.

  • @ whatnot ~ Good Job, looks clean and rideable

Cheers, got some MKS pedals on there now plus the new rear wheel but i've been through about 4 tubes trying to get it pumped up. I think it must be pinching but it's driving me crazy!

  • correct rim tape?

  • @ Mikey mike
I got the wheels from a dismantlement Cannondale Capo '08 they are Formula hubs on Miche rims ( i think they were in the hybrid range, slightly deep but not as deep as a deep V).
I believe they are pretty standard but run nice.
I removed the rear brake and I used a marker to make the machined part black ;-)
Didn't have enough money to buy 2 white tires so I only got 1 for the front but i like that the rear wheel , without the machined part, looks really thick and all black.

  • Hey. I Picked up this 80s Peugeot on eBay for a great price and am going cut the handlebars, clean it, strip it of all excess bits 'n bobs and convert it to a FG

The only problem (and reason it was a bit cheap) is that the Forks are bent. It still rides ok but I'd prefer not to be road kill. I've been looking around on the regular places but I wanted to know beforehand if there was any particular type of fork I should be looking at that will 100% be compatible with this frame and if anybody knows if dawes, schwinn, raleigh etc. forks would be fine or can I get it straightened somewhere in London

    merci

  • I would remove the forks, take some measurements and drop by Cavendish, Brick Lane Bikes or Brixton Cycles and ask it they've got anything that matches.

  • and secondly, get them to check the frame too (that if you're not sure about how it should look), because a bend fork could mean a bend frame as well, especially on the head tube.

  • This is the Pug I built up for my girlfriend.... She is very happy with it.....

  • hey Reginald, I saw your bike on ebay, shame about the fork but a good buy. I just got a peugeot locally ,paid 35 quid, I'm just looking into it's spec. etc, with a view to going fixie. Here's a few pics......

Can't see the link =( Also If all goes well I should be getting some forks tommorow.

need to clean it maybe because its dusty as fuck, remove all the shit, new saddle etc..

I am however still torn between whether I actually want a FG or SS(logic says duh, get a flip flop) but Im on such a tight budget I can only really afford a wheel with one or the other. I can't decide.

I also need to find someone with pipe cutters to chop my handlebars or perhaps rollover to my nearest hardware/B&Q, bop in with my handlebars and just sneakily use some cutters to do the job without actually buying them.

  • use can just use a hacksaw and some glasspaper, that's what I did and it seems fine :) you can also get some real budget flip-flops as well, just as cheap as fixed.

That's a really nice simple conversion. I love this kind of look. I'm just starting to build my girlfriend a bike and this kind of thing would be ideal, so...

If anyone has, or knows of, a cheap bike that's in good condition then I'll probably take it. Nice and light would be good!

  • correct rim tape?

Yep, spot on. The tube was pushing the tape out of the way and then it was pinching inside the rim. So I'm pretty much finished now, here she is:

I'm loving this thread, it's so cool to see people resurrecting these 80s classics!

  • Saddle and stem position aside... that's looking good. They're great colours.

  • Really nice bike WhatNot - I see that you ended up getting a new rear wheel, looking good.
Drop the stem and put on some straps and you are onto a winner there...Nice one!

FTW! I had a similar problem when my shit CBS (Closest Bike Shop, as I used a different one as my LBS) gave me the rubber strip for a rim with recessed nipple holes (oo-er?)

Nice bike. I'll get some pics of my champion up at some point, once it has a slightly less stupid gear on it (63" cause thats the only sprocket and chainring I had..)

Any one replaced a french threaded fork or headset? I need a few spares. Stronglight headset on the bike at the moment, but anything would be considered. I need a new serrated washer for the top in particular cause mine is cracked, but anything from the top half (when the bottom races give out I'll be replacing them with a modern sealed bit for a frankenstein setup..)

  • yeah what not, drop the stem and get some straps and it will be nice! the gear looks ridiculously spiny, you might find you will want something lower than that over time.
