  • I'm not used to this whole 'injuring yourself and having long-term problems' thing... whenever I hurt myself it gets better on it's own... Is this what I have to look forward to?!

i'm like that too, i tend to recover quick.

  • My dad swears by glucosamine, he takes it in a liquid form. He broke his knee when he was 18, and has had keyhole surgery to remove bits of cartilage twice. If the bit of cartilage is broken off you will need surgery. Then when it is healed you *need to exercise it a lot. *Cycling is good, its low impact.
    Good luck on the recovery

thats because you're a whipper snapper, I swear the closer I get to thirty the longer it takes to recover. hangovers inlcuded. maybe i'm just in bad fucking shape...

Thirty? Fuck mate you're in for a shock in ten years time. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it only gets worse after thirty.

Yeah you rumbled me, I'm actually only 6, and the worst injury I've ever suffered was a bump on the knee. :)

i'm not looking forward to it will...

  • I had a bad snowboarding accident 10 yrs ago and that left me with cartilage damage. I was in complete agony and at the point where I couldn't get out of bed without feeling like I was kneeling on broken glass.

I got onto Glucosamine and Chondroitin and swear by its usefulness.I combined this with Bee Venom which stimulates hormones such as cortisone and hydrocortisone that increase the immune system's ability to reduce inflammation, when used in conjuction with Glucosamine and Chondroitin it can help increase joint movement and flexibility with cartilage repair.

This combination stimulates the synthesis of new cartilage and for me it works! , only occasionally I have the odd pain now and again if ive been in heels all day..

    good luck!

  • please get it treated, I am 24 and due to not treating injuries in my knee I now have rheumatoid Arthritis and its agony every day.

  • I've had surgery on both knees for lateral meniscus tears the last surgery happening last April. Simple surgery, was out of commission for about 2 months. I can ride my bike around the F'in planet now with no problem, but I can't run across the street to save my life? I cant put any percussive pressure on my left knee, So no running or jumping for me anymore :(

  • i destroyed my left knee playing football 4 years ago a had to have two rounds of keyhole to scrap the debris out. I have around 20% of the original mass left now.
the docs gave me the choice to stop playing any sport and probably keep my knee for the rest of my life or continue being active and probably have to have the knee stripped and plated or entirely replaced at some point in the future. i opted for the later and havent had any problems since.
stick to the physio its invaluable. ive have taken glucosamine but found it to be of little benefit. best thing to do is to strengthen the muscles around the joint. this helps control it and prevent further damage whilst maintaining range of motion. i now have a higher range of motion in the damaged joint than the undamaged joint. i was also provided with far to many post op painkillers and as a result developed a mild addiction to them, which whilst pleasant enough at the time wasnt very useful when i was try to finish my phd.
    moral of the story:
get the surgery and exercise the joint a lot but carefully after the knife to build musculature.

  • Do not, catagorically do not ignore it. Get the surgery if you can as it will stop you living in agony and prolongue the life of your knee and therefore cycling addiction. 6 weeks out now is far better than having to stop for the rest of your life in a decade.

If I could get a surgery to fix my knee sucessfully then I'd do it in a heartbeat. Cycling can be brutally painful and I'm bored of using crutches.

  • and get two brakes for when you do start riding.

  • and get SPD's they help a lot

  • This thread is making me feel better about my injuries... torn ligaments in both knees and ankles broken most of the bones on my right side (well: jaw, collar, ankle, arm, rib, shin and finger)...

But no noticeable after effects... except the day before it snows my collar bone tingles...

  • i injured my knee playing football three months ago and just as the swelling was going down it has blown up again. literally stood up whilst sitting crossed leg replacing an inner tube.
My GP says cruciate ligament damage and i'm waiting for a scan or similar at the moment.

i'm supposed to be cycling to paris for charity in 3 weeks.
i have a "york fitness" knee support but it doesn't affect it at all. fixed is definitely on hold for a while.
anyone know any better knee supports or secret remedies???

  • For now I would forget about cycling to paris if you still wanna be walking afterwards, those neoprene supports aren't worth shit if you have serious damage, so you might as well throw that away.
Yes there are much better knee supports out there but they are very expensive, if you want better take a look at these:

You'll look and feel like robocop, but at least your knee will thank you, not sure about secret remedies, but regular stretching will help a lot, and I have found light swimming good for getting the blood pumping through a joint without stressing it too much, the usual glucosamine chondroitin MSM combo can help a bit too.

  • you'll be fine, if it's not too severe a cartilage tear then you should be able to use your knee as normal even before the surgery.
And if you do get the op done then it's a day case and you should be out within a matter of hours.
I had mine done a few years ago and was back riding my BMX within a month.
Just rest it until you think it feels as it should.
glucosomine is a good suggestion, but again, i'm not convinced.
i did end up tearing my ACL and having most of my cartilage removed so i guess that's mhy.
    good luck with the recovery

  • glucosamine, chrondroitinn and cod liver oil. rosehips tablets are supposed to be good to.

physio is a must, try and do strenthening exercises as much as possible. swimming is great. i have also invested in one of those trampettes, which lets you exercise without the stress on joints, and you can do it in front of the tv...

they also say that plants from the nightshade family (tomatoes, aubergines etc) are not good for arthritis. something to do with the acid or something.

good luck with it and definitely get it seen to - it will be worth it in the long run.

  • ^+1
My mum has knee problems with cartilage and just took glucosamine and cod liver oil
And swimming was the best form of exercise for her at the time as it just supports the muscles without putting any strain on it .
That was the best thing for her at the time and had some form of injections in the knee

Best of luck with the ride and try not to push yourself too hard :)

  • Tried long and hard to find an answer to this on the internet but couldn't. I guess knee cartilage/meniscus injuries are fairly common among cyclists. I am about 75% sure I will have to have surgery (arthroscopy), or at least that surgery is the best option. My question is: what is the waiting time on the NHS to get knee arthroscopy surgery? I am basically out of action for all physical activities indefinitely, and it's killing me not knowing how long I'll have to wait. At the moment I'm going through the motions of physiotherapy. I know I don't need physio, my knee is/was fucking strong, I can feel the muscle strength and the ligaments are back to normal too; it's just fucked up inside. I guess they just ram this physio BS down your throat to try and minimise the amount of surgery they have to pay for.

  • I tore up the innards of my knee. Thought I would definetely need surgery. But due to some general NHS incompetence I ended up having to wait many months to get my scans and finally be referred to relevant doctors nearly a year later.

Needless to say, I had got stuck in with lots of my own heavy rehab to get myself back on my feet. By the time I had my scan they could not actually find a tear. My knee still felt a little fucked, but it had healed!

Now about 1 1/2 years since my injury, I can do anything I want with my leg/knee. No longer causes me problems. It still feels a little weird, and there is some grinding with a fully bent knee. But I would say its up to 90% .

I dont know what the details of your issue is, and you would do good do find a clever doctor with sports experience to help you out. But instinct tells me, meniscus injuries in particular (which I think mine was) can probable heal themselves with the right rehab. The meniscii are like pads which your femur (condoyles?) rest on, and they kind of hold stuff in place and cushion somewhat. When you get a tear, a part of your meniscii is usually dangling causing pain and poor motion of the knee. The surgery just goes in to chop it out, nothing it put there in its place. Its just chopped out.

So basically, in my laymans perception. I reckon you can just tough it out like I did. It will hurt like a motherfucker to begin with, with terrible ROM and clicking/grinding. But If your work hard you can hopefully get it to heal in the right way regaining full ROM mostly pain free.

  • Some silly cow pulled out in front of me and I ended up on her bonnet, hit my knee cap head on in the process.

I had a previous meniscus injury in the same knee from a few years before, from coming off in the rain. You are right that basically there is a part of the meniscus dangling called a 'flap'. They can either cut it out, meaning you WILL get arthritis in that knee, or if it's in a place with adequate blood supply they can push it back in.

I am not having anything cut out, I would rather tough it out and let it semi-heal than get arthritis in 20 years time. But there is the chance that it can heal properly with surgery. It all depends on the results of an MRI.

Also the official opinion is not to put any undue stress on it and let it try to heal, rather than toughing it out. I am gonna give it a chance first, but it has been 7 weeks and it almost certainly would feel better than it does now if it was going to heal.

  • The idea that the body heals with no stimulus is plain reedickooluss.

Ligaments are not like muscle/soft tissue. It will take a really long time, think in blocks of 7 months rather than 7 weeks.

I couldnt comfortably walk on mine for a year. I cycled, and I squatted a barbell. That is how I fixed mine. Physiotherapists and doctors were useless, I only got to see fucktards.

I have recently finally been referred to someone good with sports experience, hopefully she will help me iron out my niggling issues like tendonitis which I have in my corresponding hamstring.

  • It's definitely not my ligaments that are hurting. They were bruised or w/e for a few weeks but there were no tears or anything. If there were tears then it would take months, but if there were tears I wouldn't have been walking after 2 weeks. The problem is if I bent my knee too much it hurts like crazy, and also the process of bending it hurts (i.e. the 'friction' against the flap from cycling).

I just want to know the timeframe of the NHS so I can decide whether to go get a private MRI.

  • Mine took ages. Injury in march 2009, scan in late june. Got to see crap bell end moron doctor regarding scan at the end of July.

This would probably be different based on where you are. I think the NHS are running the choose and book system now, so if you have a referral you can check the wait times yourself.
