what chain is it? some seem to just be noisier...I had a KMC kool chain that made a racket.

its an Izumi chain.
I'm sure he'd rather not buy another one as he just bought this one! DamnThe chain did come with oil but I put a bit more one as it was so noisy and the cog and chainring were so dry.

sounds like the chain-line might be out.

I think the chainring may be a little worn and the chain may be a teeny bit slack... I'll have a look later.
Just had an update from him though: he reckons it's getting a bit quieter already. -

is possibly issues with chainring size/chain size as all the above have said, but also keep in mind that izumi chains almost always (at least every one that i've had/my mates have had) sound like tractors. loud chains. get kmc/hkk/did instead. or even sram. much quieter.

+1 for everything above.
I thought i had enough slack o my chain and it made a hell of a lot of noise, loosened it off a bit more and it was fine. Also, after a bit of riding and braking with the legs it quietened down loads too. All the chains i've used just need a bit of breaking in. I doubt it's the chainring as it'll get quieter the more it wears in.

hello
i have UTFSed and googled extensively on this, but can't find what i am looking for...
i have got a charge plug and the chain is very noisy, it is the standard half link chain that comes with it. i spoke to one of the guys in cavendish cycles and he said that they were directional and maybe that was the problem. i have tried the chain the other way round, and it is even worse and even seems to catch slightly so i have put it back the way it was.
the way it is now is the narrow part of each link engages first with the cog. this seems to be the right way...
can anyone recommend a decent (non half link?) chain that will work for my set up? i have the standard sugino messenger chain ring and 16t cog from blb.
any thoughts?

plus it not necessarily the chain. try using wax lube, "white lightening"

I found both of them but am still not clear on what can be done...
I am already using white lightning epic. I took the chain off, gave it a good clean and re lubed it but still noisy.
Any thoughts on replacement chain?

i changed my cog recently. much quieter than before. so it could be that also.

I'm running a KMC 710 on my plug... it's pretty much silent when properlly lubed. However, I'm running a Condor cog, rather than the stock so that might help as well.

"white lightening"
Perhaps you need something heavier...

i use an SRAM PC-10. i just lubed it with sunflower oil - silence! cheap, too.
your chain/cog/chainwheel should take a while to get used to each other. the noise usually dissapears with time. make sure your chain isn't too tight too, that helps a LOT. you want to be able to move it up and down and feel some slack.

This will not help your chain.

that's because that's an alcoholic beverage.

I'll bet you say that to all the boys...

Quietest chain I've used is Wippermann

Probably not going to be the problem as you've got an OTP, but alot of the time chain noise can caused by not having a perfect chain line. Also, i use finish line teflon dry lube. Good stuff.

any chain by sram or kmc, even the cheapest should be fine. If it continues then maybe its the rear cog (more likely than the chainring)
Epic washes off very quickly and needs to be applied very regularly although it does work the best when it has just been applied. Try white lighening WAXLUBE as it lasts longer and runs quieter. -

i used to ride with one of the blb cogs and my drivetrain was very noisy, since changing to a phil wood cog and a new izumi chain it has all gone very quiet.
i think the biggest source of noise is the cog.
3/32 on 1/8 does not compute!
