  • i still can't believe this story!!! is there any news on how she is?

    Any update?

  • Any update?

Her mum actually started writing a blog about the girl. I just checked and her condition has gone from critical to serious, i.e. her life is not in danger anymore. The surgery done today was successful, but there is quite a bit more to be done apparently.

  • In Holland they have the opposite approach to liability to most countries including ours and Norway.

The Dutch philosophy is "Cyclists are not dangerous; cars and car drivers are; so cars should take the responsibility for avoiding collisions with cyclists. This implies that car drivers are almost always liable when a collision with a bicycle occurs and should adapt their speed when bicycles share the roads with motorists"

go and tell everyone in positions of authority that^
we can take strength from it.

Thank you for the update, that's good to hear, hopefully she will get better and better

This sounds very much like the law in Norway. The thing that worries me, is that it seems to cause certian pedestrians and cyclist to be very reckless. Although the effect it has on motorists is debatable. You'd have to be pretty fecked up to aviod killing/hurting people with your car, because of liability worries alone.

I personally came within a hairs bredth of knocking down a cyclist a couple of months ago. I came off a roundabout, and was about to cross the badly placed pedestrian crossing directly after, when a lady on a bike swerved off the pavement and onto said crossing. I did an emergency stop and missed her by a foot or so. I sat there pretty freaked out, trying to see how I fecked up (I hardly ever drive, so figured it was my fault). I could'nt help but picture the car hitting her. I snapped out of it when I realised my son was crying in the back. He was unhurt by the incident, but it scarred the hell out of him.

After thinking about it I realised that this womans 'I'm just going to cycle into the road because cars have to stop by law' atitude. Could have seriously hurt my son and caused him to spend a fair amount of time with a father in prision.

I totally agree that motorists should be made to be as careful as possible, just not at the expense of pedestrian/cyclist caution.

Ideally we'd all drive/cycle/walk in manner that best avoids the kind of tragic events descibed above, regardless trivial matters such as legal liability.

  • so youre saying that everyone should have personal responsibility, which I totally agree with. at the same time the Dutch focus is right imo, the opposite view that car is king that is the dominant culture here has led to what?
kids and adults routinely riding on pavements causing friction.
some of the worst obesity stats in Europe.
some of the reportedly unhappiest children in Europe, with less independence than any previous generation.
I hate what cars have done to our country, and by extension its people.

  • Car have not made Britain fat.

    Chips, pies and curries have.

No, I think the focus is totally correct, and that the laws should remain the same.

I was just trying to point out that the results of such laws are not all positive.

    BTW
The parents have asked the headmaster of the local school to inform the girls students not to blame/hate the drivewrs involved.

Despite this the police have now had to close the 'Susanne-Blog' comments section due to too many hate filled comments towards the drivers.

The drivers are being reinterviewed by the police.

Susanne is still in serious condition with 30% burns, head injurys, and broken bones. Though according to her mums entrys in the blogg. She is showing some small signs of improvement.

  • what an amazingly strong girl - such a fighter!
