Next bike?

Right, need a bit of advice. Moved closer to work and thankfully spending far more time on the bike. Have a bianchi pista at the moment and though it's doing me fine, I think I'm going to take the plunge, sell the car and invest in something of proper beauty to take around.

Anyone any easier to find alternatives? Budget will be as much as I can get for the car so prob around the 1500e mark. It'll be purely a road bike rather than trick bike.

what sort of budget do you have?
what material frame do you want (alu. steel, ti)?
do you want new style or old? (quill or ahead stem)

Budget is about 1500euro. I don't know how far that money would get me in terms of a shop14 type build either?

I don't have the skills or the time for a self build either and nothing in the otp thread tickles my fancy, I am fussy!

Maybe consider a bob jackson frame or something similar, a fitted frame would be a nice start.
Geekhouse? Hardly vintage I know but very nice.
As far as Irish framebuilders go im not too familiar with any really, is Allen Irish?
If you got yourself the parts together that you like I would have no problem building it for you where you lack the skills. Otp doesnt have to be limitation because of skills and time.

Hmm... If you were to be sensible about how you shopped and took a little bit of time you couold get something really beautiful... Vintage Italian or NJS if you fancied... Any of the lads here would all be happy to lend a hand regarding assembly and such and you'd end up with a really lovely bike!

Cheers lads, i'll follow up on what your saying, geekhouse would be great too. Above all I would like the frame to fit perfectly, I feel the pista is prob a little too small at 57, so that's what's putting me off risking the likes of geekhouse.

And minuteman I hadn't really thought about selling the pista, was considering using that as a lock up bike, as I'm in the lucky situation that I can keep my bike secure at home and bring it into the office. I guess it would free up a bit more money though.

If no, get two bikes, one for commuting and one for racing/tricks/whatever you're into.

@edscoble there's no custom framebuilders here that I know of, though a mate is heading off to the states soon to learn, so it should be nice when he's back with some knowledge :)

OP -you could build a really nice bike up for that money, though you may be waiting a while for a frame to turn up. A custom build would be nice, and you could get a Mercian for that sorta cash -you may have to go slightly budget on the crankset, but 1500 would get you a Super Vigorelli, and it'd be very tasty

I emailed the dude at hetchins and he told me that all his framesets are custom so tere wouldn't be any issues as far as size goes.
Also the framesets cost between £850 and £1250

Sounds great tiny, I'd imagine there's a good niche here for that sort of thing. I do love the mash vigorelli too but i'd imagine extremely hard to get.

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a bike that is inevitably going to break, be stolen, or be crashed unless it was a competition bike. Especially if it meant selling my car to do so (I don't own a car anyway). Also, all this fixed gear shit is totally played out and you'll just look like a dude commuting on a downhill mtb in a couple of weeks.

As for sizing. If you want it to fit perfectly you'll have to ride before you buy. You'd be very lucky to order a custom bike that just happens to fit given measurements. You never know til you're on the bike. How many classic Italian road frames have you ridden? How do you know you like them etc.

I see where you're coming from and that's one angle alright...you could however apply that logic to anything (Cars/motorbikes etc.). I enjoy the aesthetics of a bike too, as is obvious many others do with the bike porn thread going strong everyday.

This bike will live inside my apartment, and can be taken into the office, it won't be a bike to take to the shops or leave locked in city centre for the day.

I clearly don't want to sacrifice the practicality of the bike either in trying to avoid the 'not riding before I buy' hence mention of shop14 and trying to source the ciocc within a reasonable distance.

I thought they might have though my budget was 150!...not however exactly what I was looking for.

proper track bikes with deep drops etc aren't practical or comfortable for regular commuting. yes people manage, but it's not the best idea. what about a nice road bike? for £1500 the field is wide open. maybe a single-speed road bike if you can't be bothered with gears?

I actually sold my road bike a few months back, just preferred the handling of the pista, the road bike felt sloppy in comparison and simply didn't use it at all. I've never tried anything of comprimise ie. slightly slacker geometry, what is in this category, IRO maybe?
