Crankset for Conversion

Posted on
  • Hi,
being new to the world of bike mechanics I need some help replacing my crankset. I got a cheap Raleigh Winner from the paper and converted it into a fixed without many problems and thanks to the help of this board!

    Now for my problem...............

My crank set is bent which is causing problems with the chain line. I would like to buy a new crank set but im unsure what to get or how to chose. Some advice / pointers would be brilliant.

    Cheers!

  • Generally Hubs, BB's and Cranks determin chaniline. So for example, if you have phil wood hubs, and sugino 75 crank arms, You will need a 109 bb to get a straight chainline. Most modern BB's are adjustable, so you can screw one cup in slightly further than the other which gives you a bit of room for error.
So if you buy Sugino RD messenger cranks (which are generally excepted to be good budget crank arms), all you really need to do is find out what their recomended BB length is, and you'll get a straight chainline.
I would say Sugino RD's might be the way to go - think they're about £70.

not really. only the miche (which is a bit shit) and the Phil and maybe one or 2 more are adjustable. and besides its not good to de-center your cranks for obvious reasons. although i spose you could, but its fucking annoying having one leg powering at a different angle to the other at the cranks. Wonky.

get the cranks you want, whatever they may be.
fit them to any old BB with a known length,
    measure the chainline up front,
and measure the chainline at back,
work out the disparity between chainlines
then multiply this dissparity by 2 and add this number to the BB spindle length you have.
This is the length of the BB you need.

    done

  • cheers for the comments guys! ill post back if i have any further questions. Cheers again!

  • The recommended crank set list also comes in handy http://www.londonfgss.com/thread14421.html

  • Check your bottom bracket threading, it may Raleigh threaded.
