What's the question?

I like to think it's like belly buttons.
Hex key = "inny"
15 mm Bolt = "outy"
I think that should clear it up.

you can get some alright self-extracting allen bolts. I just have the regular 8mm allen ones with the black rubber/plastic seal. I find them much easier that regular hex bolts

I think that if you use Allen Bolt fittings you should use allen keys to tighten them up.
If you use the usual bolt then you should use a socket as the allen key will be the wrong tool for the job. -
• #7
I also think that you are a tool.

What the fuck has this got to do with Hong Kong and Japanese cinema of the late 80's and early 90's?
-
• #9
BMMF like your tool.
-
• #10
I thought that it was normally a 14mm socket, so on that note I shall banish myself from mech and fixing.

Allen key wins.

14mm bolts let you put on spiffy dust covers.

splifs for dust covers?
Not practical. The roach would be too large.

Light weight.

what if you don't have one?
Then you are either the sporn of Satan or God or you have BMX or external bearing cranks.

(It's all Campag, BTW - hippy, you can just ignore the thread from this point onwards)
Ok.

Thanks so much, everyone. It's been both entertaining AND informative. I really hope we can get together and do it again soon.
I just got some new track cranks. They came with 15mm bolts - the type you need a socket wrench for. I don't really like the idea of them, so I've ordered some 8mm allen type instead.
Now I don't want to start an internet cycling tribe conflict or anything, but what does anyone think about the achingly boring topic in hand?
