Slightly off thread but reading Tynans account of cuffs brought back memories ...
Cuffed with hands behind your back and carried from van to - station - to cell - by your arms is SO FUCKING PAINFUL
It's bad isn't it !! I always had this parochial view of handcuffs as the things you see in cowboy films - with a chain between the two manacles, but when you get some real solid/non-flexible cuffs on you, you realise that they do a very good job at controlling your physical movements through some pretty full on pain.

my precious Behringer Ultrafex II came down the stairs after me and was damaged beyond repair .
some good came of it then?
Are you trying to tell me that over produced and incredibly harsh mixes are not cool any more ?

It's not harassment but is a good case of the police exceeding their powers/ acting without lawful authority.
If people get grief like this they should be checking out: ipcc.gov.uk
The IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) isn't great - 94% of complaints against the Metropolitan police fail, but that's all we've got. The website details how to bring a complaint. Most straightforward matters will then be referred to the force in question.
The police will try and put you through something called 'local resolution'- don't do this, it'll just be swept under the carpet. Insist on a formal investigation.
If you need help I'll happily offer my time (for a pint)- if you succeed with your complaint or think you may have a claim, definitely see me!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Can we all start formally complaining every time we get harassed by the cops or knocked off by a car?!??!? Please!!
It is the easiest way to create a legitimate argument about how cyclists are treated in London.
We can't expect Big Brother to help if he doesn't know that there's an issue.
At the end of the year when they see a rise in cyclists harassed, bikes stolen, people hit by cars, it gives us something to talk about and demand change with. -

Asking for their number might well get you a "right you're nicked you cheeky fucker" - you will probably be taken for a public order offensive and even resisting arrest/assaulting a police officer.
Really, I did it every time I got stopped during my time as a courier, which was frequently, given the way I rode, it worked every one of the 40 or so times I had a run in with them....only ever got one ticket.
Making a note of their number shows that you know your rights and you're not going to be a pushover, they're less likey to falsely arrest you if they think you might genuinely follw it up.....

This thread gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.. good to know that there's so much animosity toward the forces of state oppression.
re: bike cops.. until recently, the real po around here had big powerful lights on their bikes, while the community-support fakenpigengers were fobbed off with non-BSI compliant blinkies. I had to point out to them how little respect was being paid to their safety even by their own force.

+1 for getting their number. I find asking to see their ID before I give them any information is a marvellous game. Didnt work last time though (for riding across cambridge circus on a 4-way red light). To be fair, it might have done had said copper not made up some inflated statistics on how many peds are killed by cyclists every year, at which point I got tired of my usual polite-apologetic-i-know-the-law act (that almost always gets me out of a ticket) and replied "bollocks. Whats the point in lying to me? Who does that actually help?"
So I got his number. And that of his partner, who REALLY didnt like being accused of lying to me. And a ticket.

Did you know that Cambridge Circus is the most dangerous intersection in . . .wait for it . . the whole of the U.K !!!!!!
Seems hard to believe, but there was a whole program on it broadcast three or four years back, if anyone could remember the name of the program I would love to look it up again.

Always a bad apple or apples.
Shame really this happened.
On the whole i respect and appreciate the old bill cos when i've been in bother they've always been there,
although all they can do is enforce the law like the rest of us.
There will always be bad apples. Always. But there you go.Compared to other countries, police here are fairer, something that's often overlooked I think.
People always begrudge the police but without them the whole situation would be fooked. -

Tyan I totally understand why you are so negative about the complaints process - especially after a horrible experience like that, but I agree with Winston, Roxy and the other fellow.
Bad cops are bullies. If you let them, they will push you around. If you stand up to them, for sure there's a chance that they will fuck you up properly, but there's an even better chance that they will back down.

Thats pretty bad but not unexpected. alot of Ham and Fulham cops are complete knobs. Just do all you can do and insist on copies of everything, and give em as much paperwork as possible.
Then tell em about an illegally parked car, or make complaints about everything you can and legitimatly waste as much of their time as poissible.
Sounds like an ad for a breakfast cereal. :)
