  • really. ben goldacre provides much better answers.
in short woo therapies are effective in that they make the person having them feel special, that they get personal attention.

as for homeopathy/woo medicines not causing any harm, have you heard of
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthias_Rath

    thank you and goodnight.

Damo, you don't really give a monkeys about the well being of people who take different types of medical remedy (as if you did you wouldn't waste time on posting these links), but are merely using their plight as a sounding board or mouth-piece for an intelligent-sounding ego-boosting argument, that serves only to belittle one party whilst also being quite self-aggrandising.

    :P

  • No,not ad hominem, just explaining, not very well, my earlier assertion that I think the anti-homoeopathy argument is one best reserved for general 'anti-everything but what I do' arguments.
The 'you' in that sentence wasn't you, Tynan, in particular, so please don't jump so quickly to use the ad hominem device - it itself is as dull as an ad hominem argument.

Myself I'm not an advocate of homoeopathy or acupuncture, and I'm also deeply sceptical about over the counter pharmaceutical sold like sweeties, but I've been spending a few hours each week for the last 3 years sitting in a med-school canteen.
The people I've been earwigging on are the GPs of the future, and I'm still in shock at the some of the smug hand-me-down bullshit that rises out of their weird rants - hence my weird rantings here.

  • ^^ Oh think of the children!
Ha ha what a crock of shit.

    Bad hominem ?

If someone wanted to treat their child's leukaemia with water would you either advise against doing so or even force them from doing so ?

It may seem like a deliberately emotional ploy to squeeze out an answer, but it is a valid question nonetheless, and challenges the 'if they want to then why stop them' argument.

  • Tiswas = Tynan right?

  • I seem to have anti-hayfever, I wake up in the mornings feeling really shitty but after a short ride (10 minutes or so) I am totally fine. Last summer I was a gardener and I was fine all day at work so I'm certain it's not hayfever. I'm pretty sure it is a dust allergy of some sort but I haven't really been able to find much information about preventing/reducing it.
I used to get this ALL THE TIME, and it was really the bane of my existence. The first doctor I saw gave me neoclarytin which I took for like a year and it didn't make any difference. Then I went back and another doctor gave me "Nasonex" spray which you shoot up your nose. Took that stuff for about 2 weeks and now I'm totally fine. I think I was allergic to pollutants from cars, because I when I went on holiday to the alps I was fine as well, even before taking the nasal spray.

  • GPs are people too. Med students are twats. Students are twats. People of that age are twats. People are twats.

Completely ad hominem! You should be ashamed of yourself! ;)

  • Pharmaceutical drugs on the other hand are worthy of much more close inspection that is so far being avoided by the discussion of harmless sugar pills...

Do you have any idea how much testing goes into 1 particular drug..

Approximately 1/2 billion dollars to a Billions dollars and that was written a few years ago.

Look at Figure 2.2 that is before manufacture there are 3 rounds of clinical testing and approval. (this is probably in the USA mind you).

Homeopathy, Acupunture and the other alternative treatments aren't required to go through any of these processes.

Unfortunately that is what has happened in America except not with homeopathy/acupunture but faith healing.

  • Wasn't acupuncture shown to have an affect, more than mere placebo, but that the placement of needles was all but irrelevant. Which sort of throws a spanner in the works of the electrical pathways explanation. Or a needle, if you will. Except that the needle could be thrown anywhere, and still affect the works.

    Oh, and +1 for loratadine.

I can understand that... I throw needles transdermally into people myself on occasion, so that people get a natural high from Beta-Endorphins.

Must admit, I've not looked into having Acupucture at all, the very thought squicks me.

I do know Acupressure works for me though... having used that myself for the relief of back-pain.

  • I started getting hayfever about 1990 and it only lasts for a couple of weeks and always around mid June. Last year I hardly suffered from it and this year I took tablets once only so far. The only real symptoms I've experienced this season has been itchy eyes after a long ride including this evening's outing which included a run through Bexley's finest country lane (the North Cray Road).
Fingers crossed I'm over it but don't ask how or why.

  • ive been suffering it so much of late in the last 3 years, before then i never once expoerienced it before.....very annoying, specially festival time, my girlfriend has it earlier and it finishes earlier, think she's allegic to tree pollen cause that comes earlier, but im allegic later and ends later, completely destroying my summer!!! need to find something that works soon or i will go mad!!! aghhhhhhhhhhhh

ive been having the same problems but have had some relief lately. My gf is a naturopath and advised me to change my diet somewhat.. Im eating less dairy and more fruit & vege, vitamin c, a food supplement called Inflavonoid (Vit C, tumeric, lemon and ginger).. essentially this is aiming to reduce inflammation (and probably just sounds like common sense huh?). I also use nasal rinse called sinu-rinse seems to have helped also. This hasnt 'cured' me but has helped.. to be honest im always worse when my diet has been poor and I havnt been exercising enough. This may not work for you, but thought I would offer some ideas for you to consider.

  • Exercise and better diet.. who woulda thunk it? :)

  • I've suggested your approach to my other half chuk - he woke up in the night the other night having a sneezing fit that lasted about 20 minutes, I've actually never seen anything like it. He's taking cetrizine but it's just not working...

  • CAN THE PLANTS PLEASE STOP HAVING SEX NOW?
    thanks.

  • You first.

haha - yeah go figure!? this moron definitely didnt ;)

No marks for clearly being so blind that you've bumped Mia off your avatar. >:<

No, commiserations. That stuff stuck on contacts is a nightmare. I mostly wear glasses at the moment.
