The northern tag is bollocks, there was a shop off Oxford St. called Contempo, that sold what we in london called "rare" soul. Off the back of the mod thing, same music different title. It all got pushed underground, by hippy and student "music" Places to be were Tottenham Royal, Lyceum, Con club, Youth club on my estate!
