THis happened to me also, i phoned continental and they said it was becausue the tyres are soft rubber to increase grip, i had just finished touring england and we camped and my bike was left in the wet so the rubber started to degrade slightly meaning after i locked up once it ripped a chunk out.
Continental didnt give me a refund but they did give me a pair of 4 season for trade price which worked out at about 37 for the pair.
