I guess the optimum depends on fitness. I'm thoroughly unfit but run 42x16 on one of my bikes and 43x16 on the other and both are fine for me. I think you would notice the difference going to 18T, I'm considering changing my 43x16 to a 17T.
Note: I mostly just cycle East to West (or vice versa) which is obviously fairly flat. If you regularly go up hills I'd go for a lower gear still.

late 60's, early 70s seems best. 69/70 for myself. That gets me up the hills as well.

spent most of my time here on an 84" gear... some time also on a 65". never had a problem with either. run a big gear and htfu or spin like a bitch!
what i'm saying is, we can't tell you what will feel right for you, or whether a certain gear will be too big for your legs... and to a large extent, it doesn't matter - just ride!

i tend to run 46-18 in the winter and 46-17 in the summer as there is normally less wind! havent not made it up any of the hills yet.....

spinny! 44x16 on my ss mtb - feels sooo weird on a pussy spinny freewheel after riding a 49x14 all week.
Hello
I have a question about gear inches. What gear inches are everyone running in sunny Brighton and is there an optimum?
I am currently running 46x17 (73.1) but I am thinking of changing the rear sprocket to 18T to give me a lower GI. Is the difference in these two significant? Or would i need to go to 19T to feel any difference?
Thanks
Ricky
