Do it. Just got my mate a 26" wheel as they're more available.
You can get 28c gatorskins in 26" size

This one runs 26" MTB-rim front, and a wide 700c-rim on the rear... 32mm tire in the rear and 1.3" (I think) in the front..

(Since that photo the pedals where replaced with Alium's and the
saddel is now a stripped Flite, so it's a bit prettier now ;)
Still didn't cost me more than around £60 since most parts are
dumpstered... :) -

thanks for the advice,
it turned up and works a treat! 28c gatorskin on it and you can hardly tell it's a mountain bike wheel at all.
soo much fun whizzing around now.

Switch the rear tyre to a black one...would look so much better.

-1,
spray paint the front tyre white and it will look better, will make no difference to the ride -

I agree, white front tyre would be a much better option

I'm sure I will when the white wears out, unless I can find white 26" skinny ones.

talk about bringing back the dead.. but this topic has saved me a shed load of bother! Thanks :D
Erm,
Thought it best to ask here.
I ride a pretty low-pro with a 650c front wheel

I've seen a cheap carbon 26" wheel mountain bike wheel up for grabs. what's the usual width of these things? is it going to look like I've just got it off a tractor or can I get a skinny enough tyre on it do you think? also how much difference in size is there between 650c and 26", I had the feeling it wasn't much?
am I being a numpty?
