I am probably a dick with no idea, but I use a Dolan around town, might be a bit bumpier than steel, but find a nice stretch of road, or a hill, and it's amazing.

You're kind of missing the point of this forum, really, arn't you?

i can't see it working. track bikes don't have brakes and you would only have one gear (your legs would never stop spinning).

Could I use it for a work hack, then try my hand at track cycling on my days off?
Probably the only serious answer you'll get - yes. If you ride with brake(s) you'll need to make sure you can take them off easily, and if you get into the track it'd probably worth keeping another set of wheels at the track with some nicer tyres or tubs.

The problem with track riding is that you can ride for fucking hours and not get anywhere.

I've just bought a track frame, should be getting it next week. I don't ride on the track though, so I'm just going to hang it on the wall as a work of art.
Just ride it on the road, it's not going to break. And like Ste says get a break you can take off reasonably easy.

They're called tarck bikes for a reason; they don't work on the road. I don't have time to go into all the details right now but basically there's not enough room to fit gears at the back, and nowhere to hang a derailler and all the cables. Plus there's no fittings for mudaguards and panniers, so definitely not road-usable IMHO.

you've bought a bike? wtf? why would you go and do that?

All bicycles will be band on London roads from October 14th 2009. So not a wise investment, I would say get a moped, would be much more use. Make sure it is a road moped, not a track moped though.

On the road with slick 23mm tyres? Mentalcase.

the biggest problem i had was lack of right-tuning ability, i find i just go around in left handed circles making commutes lengthy and often frustrating

Yes but don't forget that all London roads are going to be banned by 2015. Someone really needs to look into the economies of scale on this one.
