Peckham to Kingston-upon-Thames

  • I might be riding out that way on wednesday and need a little bit of info for anyone who has been down that way..

Basically the shortest route I've found is via Brixton/Clapham/Wandsworth and then straight down the A3.. Just wondering if it's safe enough to ride down that particular A road..

If not, then I'd be going via Balham/Colliers Wood/Raynes Park/Malden on some apparently smaller roads..

It's only a mile or so difference but if the A3 is alright to ride on then I'm pretty sure that will be a lot quicker (not to mention easier for someone who hasn't ridden down that way before)

  • The A3 aint very pretty.....you could slip off it at Roehampton and take a spin through Richmond Park.

  • yeah go via richmond park.

  • i went the A3 route once.
    it was fun.

  • fun in a trying desperately to avoid your death way?

I'll pop through the park on the way down then

  • fun as in not fun at all.

  • well, hopefully the park will brighten it up for me a bit..

  • Your allowed to ride down the pavement along side the A3. Its part cycle lane part pavement. Its not that bad i take that route to uni. And its easyer than the balham way as its just a straight line.

  • +1 the Balham, Colliers Wood, Raynes Park route it's pretty flat and way less crazy!
The other route is a bit of a drag up to Tibbets Corner from Wandsworth and then get killed on the A3!

  • this might be useful if you go that way again - my old route to work from Brixton Hill

I didn't go on the A3 - the shared pavement was quick and safe, with a useful subway halfway up

there are some great tracks through Wimbledon Common if you've got the right rubber :-)

You'll never make out of Peckham alive.

I'm off to William Hill to place a bet.

  • 11-2

  • Take the National Cycle route number 4. Follows the Thames from the middle of town then takes you through Richmond Park and out you pop through the Kingston gate.

It may not be the most direct route but it is almost completely car free (mostly tow path) and because it follows the river it is pretty flat too. Took me about an hour and a half from down Brixton way at a leisurley pace and sure beats being anywhere near the A3.

  • Did new cross gate to kingston last weekend, A3 no problems, sweet ride!

  • Cool.. I didn't do this in the end but would have probably gone down the A3 until I was able to take a parallel detour through Richmond Park

  • i would have gone to raynes park then either coombe lane (with it's cycle route along the side if the traffic is busy) or burlington rd/kingston rd/cambridge rd
(i do cycle to kingston from tooting)

  • i would have gone to raynes park then burlington rd/kingston rd/cambridge rd

That's the route you want. (also a Tooting - Kingston Cycler)
