mudguards are for vicars and schoolteachers
-

er they're shit. they never fit properly, they never stay where they're supposed to, they ALWAYS end up rubbing on a tyre (and so wear out really quickly), they rub your frame and damage the paint (if you're precious), and they get stolen.
Precious don't even come close! What do you use, if you don't mind me asking? Is there a decent alternative to raceblades? I got me no mudguard eyelets!

The buddha is correct,
aint no harm getting splashed a bit. -

um, if you've not got eyelets you've got a couple of alternatives (in reverse order of preference)....
- HTFU and get wet. Ok when it's still warm, but bike gets well muddy and so do you. plus, cold + wet = unhappy
- Fit regular mudguards using P clips - like faux eyelets. still eventually wear away the laquer, but nowhere near as fast

- own a winter bike.
So I just bought these http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=SKSAMUDR200 for half the price I could find them anywhere else.
And if you're intrested, the winter bike is a 2007 kona sutra

Cheers for that fella. I'll look into the P-clip option. Would a bit of electrical tape on the frame where they clip/strap on help with the lacquer wear issue? I like the race blades but if they move about then they're pretty fucking useless.

well there are 2 versions
SJS's own fake raceblades are absolute crap. they involve some sort of plastic screw which fucks itself up as you tighten it to mount on your bike. and there are 4 of these screwy things on each guard. and the guys at SJS are honest enough to tell you you need to wrap loads of insulating tape on your fork to prevent the damn thing from slipping down or you risk a front skid. what the hell, i salute them for honestly telling you their product is shit, after you've paid for it.then there goes the real deal, the SKS raceblades. these are decent, i own a pair, they do end up touching my back tyre a bit sometimes but that doesnt actually happen that often. these use elastic rubber bands. easy on, easy off.

well apart from that SJS is a really decent shop. i'm a regular.

mudguards are for vicars and schoolteachers
but not poseurs with gorgonzola arse?

They've just sorted me with free postage on something, after a slightly miffed email about some surface rust on some old bit I got off their ebay... which cost less than the postage I got discounted. Nice.
Thornsies give me the Hornseys.
Muddies: one's man's poison... There are always the fastboy fenders for those with a brake hole but no eyes/desire to Pclip or gaffer things.
-
• #38
Yeah I looked at the fastboy fenders. Don't think the fella's making them anymore unless you're buying a fastboy bike. They're also kinda pricey. Dilemmas dilemmas. Anyone here selling them??

I am with Skully on the Thorn...solid frames make me wanna tour.

bump - very happy with the prices / services I just got from SJS - although they do have a bit of a cling film fetish
