• I've never regularly worn a lid (big chin + hat/helmet = uberdork), and I've been lucky in that I've never had an accident, but am coming around to the idea now that I'm riding more regularly, and in rush hour traffic. I figure the longer I go without an accident, the more likely I am to have one - fuzzy logic yes.

As above I think its got to be down to personal choice though. Wearing a helmet doesn't make you more or less of a risk to other road users.

Just wish that someone would make a lid that wouldn't make me look like a cock.

• Just wish that someone would make a lid that wouldn't make me look like a cock.

• On second thoughts, no.

• And Government policy always follows scientific studies to provide the safest possible environment for citizens?

I could give you 100 examples where that is not the case.

Good point.

What I said (studies = helmet = reduction in societal health) has been an issue in past attempts to legislate helmet usage in cycling, but I accept your point.

• anyone had a good look round the new cycling section of the tfl website?
it even has a link to this forum, describing us as-

London Fixed-gear and Single-speed

**For courier wannabes and others how like fixed-gear or single-speed bikes**
** Added 15/08/2008 at 21:23 **

also, did anyone know it was bike week next saturday and fancy doing a ride called 'midsummer madness' as 2am-8am?

• . I figure the longer I go without an accident, the more likely I am to have one - fuzzy logic yes.

I would say yes. Very fuzzy logic. The more time you spend in traffic, the greater your awareness becomes and the frequency of dealing with specifically dangerous situations successfully increases, facilitating learning.

Although, I admit that some situations are out of control like someone turning right straight into you for example. Still, if that happens, I really cant see a helmet being much use anyway

• You might also be imporessed by the ranking on most popular sites of Rollapaluza and this site thanks to some hard work by an army of hippy's midgets voting away.

• I was surprised that at least some of the ads didn't show helmet use, but then I have also seen internal cycling reports showing pictures of brakeless fixed riders on the cover...

• But you would have to wear a turban though. They're not the easiest thing to put on and it seems quite an extreme length to go to avoid wearing a helmet.

You do get to carry a sword though. Swings and roundabouts.

• But you would have to wear a turban though. They're not the easiest thing to put on and it seems quite an extreme length to go to.

yeah, but if it is a choice between that and your safety, then a bit of inconvenience is not such a big deal is it? I once wiped out on some beans spilled from a heinz truck and bashed my head. Ripped my turban in two, but walked away. I've always worn a turban when cycling after that, and told everyone else that they should be wearing a turban too. Its common sense.

• So really from a medical point of view I'm a class A idiot. I don't have a lot of calcium in my diet because I can't drink milk, but I drink a fair bit of a drink that removes what little calcium I have left in me...

I obsessivley study our stats every day and I can categorically state we have never had a click through from the above page.

• So all of my work was in vain :o((

• Insider knowledge!

coshgirl could you furnish me with the appropriate form as I'd like to complain against the plaintiff for complaining. Thanks.

• I've often thought about that (the OP) when i've seen TFL bike adverts. I always wear a helmet so any change in law wouldnt really affect me anyway, but don't want to be told I have to. If they're going to make it compulsory on saftey grounds then they would have to follow that through in other areas (things like enforcing jaywalking), which would never happen.

• So all of my work was in vain :o((

Nothing new there, then. ;)

• By the way, it is an excellent decision to redress the balance a little by publishing these adverts without helmets.

• My helmet probably saved me from very serious injury when I came off earlier this week.

But, I can't remember what happened; although the evidence points to my being hit from behind - so I'm not sure if my wearing a helmet contributed to a driver not being as careful around me as he/she should have been.

People who complain about helmets and adverts really are looking for things to complain about.

• hey stompy. I read your story on the other thread, and was glad to hear you are ok.

Did you say that your helmet had cracked in two in the accident?

This always worries me because, as I understood it, helmets are supposed to work by compressing the foam inside the helmet. But I hear loads of stories on this and other forums about helmets breaking - which suggests they were not working as they were supposed to.

I wouldn't have a mum right now if she hadn't been wearing a helmet in february when she was hit head-on by a rangerover (total accident, neither party was responsible). This is reason enough for me to wear a helmet, because I'd hate for my mum to be saying the opposite ('I would still have a son if he'd been wearing a helmet' etc).

I am still sceptical about the protection offered by most cycling helmets, and various rumours regarding the fact that they aren't guaranteed for crashes over 15mph or whatever is worrying. But a son's duty to his mother to not get himself killed to death in London's dangerous London overrides all of these.

Helmet saved my bacon, I think I'll always wear one from now on.

But a helmet alone is not enough. Just as a hi-viz vest isn't enough. We've all seen the tentative cyclist, riding in the gutter, with a fluoro vest and a misadjusted helmet sitting on the back of her head.

• They've started on poor Ruffy now

• Reeeepost. ;)

• I think the reason why they are not wearing helmets etc on the TFL posters is to show that normal people, ie not people who post on here , can ride bikes in normal clothes .
