Again, because as you say...you've never had to cross 300+ miles of deep snow. I used mine for pure xc too in scotland and it was my favourite bike by far...and i've ridden a LOT of different MTB's. :)

I run my mountain bike with relatively skinny touring tyres and I get stuck in the sand :).
Probably me being a closet roadie. :D
