Find of the day: Gitane bike with Campy parts

Posted on
  • I almost lost my breath when I saw this..
I have a recycling station near my house, where people dump shit they don't need and that gets thrown away after a while.
Well, I browse it for bike parts sometimes 'cause a lot of old MTBs and such get thrown out, and today I found a goldmine.

Gitane frame (501 tubing) with all campy parts (almost)!
The wheels are unknown rims, with Campagnolo Record hubs, Campagnolo gearing-handles and both front and rear deraleurs, same for cranks and pedals with cristophe toeclips and strapsm but the stem and bars are chinelli.
The headset, brakes and brake levers are Campy as well.
Not sure about the seat post, haven't checked it out, and the seat is worn so no label.
There is no serial nr under the BB, so I'm not sure when it's from though.

I don't have a decent camera at the moment, so no close-ups for now.
I know Campy is good and expensive, but I'm not an expert. If I clean it up and keep it all-original, can I get some decent cash for it?

  • the saddle looks like a cinelli unicanitor, its what i have at the moment and its incredible comfy

  • lucky cunt

  • ^as above.. You've done very well.

If it fits, ride it and love it.. If not you're in for some free money

  • *Must *be nicked, ridden and dumped... Surely no one would just dump a bike like that?!

  • nah, loads of people have old bikes lying in their sheds that they don't want. maybe it belonged to someone's son who left home and it's just been lying around for ages. if you didn't know anything about bikes, you'd think it a POS

  • I agree with Mattty, I think it was just thrown out. It's squeeking here and there (the brakes and such) and the chain is pretty rusty, so I don't think it's been in use in the nearest past.

I do feel lucky as fuck though! Thanks wibble, I guess I'll clean it up and crease everything and try riding it. It's a bit big for me though but nothing extreme.

  • sweet. congratulations!

  • That looks like a very sexy wheelset!
    Nice frame too.
If the hubs are record then theres a good chance the other less reconisable components are also high end.

  • i'm astonished at the condition the paint/frame are in. what a find!

Not always, I got a Merckx Corsa Extra with Record Groupset that came out of a skip. Owner had bought a new Pinarello, so just chucked the Merckx out (I don't anticipate ever being so lucky again!).

  • i find thrown a way bikes all the time, nothing with a full campy group yet tho :/

  • I thought it was that one as well, but mine has no head badge and chrome forks..

  • well then I'm off to scour my local tip.

  • Nice. 1974 - 1977 Gitane. It's not a Tour de France or Super Corsa as they were Reynolds 531, but perhaps a Criterium or Super Olympic or something like that. The vintage is that of Lucien Van Impe when he won the Tour, of Bernard Hinault when he first turned pro. Old gitane catalogues here: http://www.gitaneusa.com/catalogues01.asp

I was wrong, it actually is 531 tubing! It looked like a 0 to me, but I online how the sign looks and it's definitely 531.

The SUper Olympic from 1975 looks pretty correct, at least the decals, colour and the groupset match.
