yeah, I've been past there before and eyed it up… nice surface.
If I remember rightly though there was a sign near the gate saying that it gets locked at some silly time, like 5 o'clock - could do another reccy at some point though and double check.

does 'nice surface' mean, soft, smooth, okay to fall on.. but will slow the ball down?

nice is like Newington, Downham or Mitch surfaces, "smooth" for the ball, no to grippy for the tyres, more or less clean of dirt. I don't include okay to fall on under nice description
