Wanted: Web hosting advice

Slightly off the topic of bikes I know but I'm hoping someone here might have some words of wisdom they would be willing to share.

I am building a website and need to source a web hosting company- can anyone recommend any/ tell me any I should avoid?

I could go on and on and on...Developers - Pfftt! Hosting is always the last consideration.

More space than you'll ever need and cheap as chips. I believe I can even give you some sort of voucher / discount as an existing customer.

Dreamhost can be slow to eu, or has been in the past. Just fyi :)

See my earlier comments then...It can easily get complicated and can be an in depth topic BUT it is completely dependent on your requirements and whether your budget matches your requirements.

Cheap and cheerful gives you lots of options in the UK and European Market. No one in particular to avoid, all companies have had issues over time.

Remember though - you get what you pay for. Don't expect bulletproof for £4.99/month. Or for £49.99/month for that matter.

It's going to be an online portfolio, don't reckon that I'll need more than 5gb of storage space initially, also should have mentioned that it's a co.uk domain- have noticed that some web hosting companies don't cater for those domains. Rough budget £7- £10 a month.

That's because you'll end up with lots os US based companies due to your search results.

You can also look at Amen as well, European based so no issues with the domains. 1&1 are also well thought of, amongst others.

When you're budget goes north of £1k a month, do let me know.

Yeah I second this, they're ridiculously cheap, and their basic webhosting is free for the first year (apart from £10 setup fees), which will be more than enough for a portfolio... then on its about £25 a year including domain name. Their live help is really good too...

how about hostgator? i know fuck all about this stuff but will need to soon

I'm currently with A Small Orange, on their medium package (1.5gb space, 35gb bandwidth, shared server with SSH shell access) and I pay $10 a month. I'd ideally like something similar but UK based. I'm finding my site hosted with ASO seems to lag a lot, or takes ages to load (running a few SQL based web things, mostly just Wordpress).

Ideally, I'd like a similar interface too ASO as well, ie CPanel. Any recommendations?

bumpity... looking to transfer my webhosting and renew some domains. Despite managing to build a few basic websites with dreamweaver and somehow getting them to work I am pretty clueless so would like a very simple platform to put them onto and also cheap, uk based service. Have previously used GoDaddy and then Strato. Would recommend neither.

What's your budget per month? And what is your level of experience (can you build a server, or do you just know FTP?)?

I've been with Clook for a few years and they have been superb. They also host my photographer's association site and a very busy email list. A number of other photographer use them as well and we have all had nothing but good to say about them.

They are also based here in the UK with UK servers. Support is very, very good.
