Cruiser Bike Build advice

Posted on
  • Hi all, am nearly finished my first build (which I shall post later on in current projects, currently waiting on King headset) but am eager to start my next project, a cruiser.

I wondered if anyone has built a 'relaxed' bike and what the results were like.
I've seen a few Raleighs posted on the forum before - Dogsballs - which were particluarly nice.

In terms of my ideal set up, I have yet to decide, but I have to admit liking the style as evinced in the US, of the beach cruisers (See Electra Bike Company), although that said something a little like an old Raleigh is not out of the question. It would definitely be singlespeed and maybe have a coaster brake - that much I am certain of!

    Any advice?

  • here's the question; would you want a lightweight cruiser or those proper curvy frame cruiser?

even the heaviest frame will be reasonably light with the right component, which in that case, go for a cheap one (i.e. Raleigh) go for coaster brake, especially a velosteer one from Bikefix in Lamb Conduit, they're reliable and cheap, great buy (£20).

  • I'm not sure actually! The aesthete in me wants a lightweight minimal one but I like the idea of a curvy thing because it's fun and a bit different. Ah, decisions!

  • Build this haha

  • electra bikes were my inspiration always loved beach cruisers,
i stated off with a raleigh bomber and put some nice parts on it, whitewalls etc and was a 24'' wheel so wasnt hard to get the look.
i then managed to get a 50's schwinn from ebay im building in the style of the electra indian motorbike based one matt red primer etc.
    theres a good uk site lowrider.co.uk i think - worth a google.
theres plenty cheap curved 'cruiser' style frames which are cheap and heavy modern version that you could strip down and build up with chopper bars etc i believe decathlon even have a cruiser style bike.

Cheers for the advice, I love the Electra bikes as well. Definitely something to aim toward perhaps...

  • I have a dyno moto7 for sale at the moment- it is in the shopping thread.
It has the curvy beach cruiser frame that would suit.

Have a look and let me know what you think- you are welcome to come and have a look at it.

  • let me know what you think

Yeah, had a look at this before when I was searching the forum for cruiser threads, to be honest I still haven't made my mind up on whether I want a beach / Raliegh-type cruiser. But will contact you forthwith if I fancy a view...

  • This is my Electra (First Post!)

It's currently getting a powder coat from Armourtex, kind of urbanised it, and it's very heavy...

But it's seriously one of the comfiest bikes I've ever ridden. Did the London to Brighton on it twice now.

    For inspiration!
