As a friendly chap who walked into a bike shop near me pointed out, the tags are typically glued or slipped down inside the seat tube so all you need is to ram a broom handle down the tube, chip crushed and you may as well not have bothered in the first place. I'm sure he didn't make a living stealing bikes or anything...
Having said that, it's only helpful if the bike is recovered by the Police in the first place, and given the low priority that theft in general seems to attract, the chances of recovery are slim to fuck all. IMO, you're much better off assuming the Police will do nothing (which is probably true) and dealing with this whole issue yourself by:
a) using decent locks and being aware of where you park your bike so it is much less likely to get nicked in the first place
b) having insurance that means you can replace your bike should it be stolen
