• Finally out of the nursery stage. I am looking to build my first fixie after having a quick ride on one. My knowledge is limited but growing thanks to all the info on this site.

Anyways, I think first step is to secure myself a frame. Im 5 10" so would i be right in thinking i need around a 58cm or so? I would probably prefer a older/vintage style frame to get re-sprayed as my girls brother can do it for free. If anyone could recommend a specific model or where is best to get my hands on one then please let me know.

Ive got my eye on h plus son white rims as i like how deep they are. Plus a sugino messenger white crankset. Would love a brooks swallow saddle but that can come when i have the doe. Im thinking of chrome dropped handle bars with brooks grip wrapped round.

Just any info you can help me out with would be great, and if i have got any of the above wrong then its because my knowledge is limited.

Looking forward to getting this started!!

  • What's your budget?

  • 58cm is a bit big. I'm your height and thought I needed a 56cm. I was told a 54cm would be more appropriate.

  • Get a 531 frame. Allow about £60-100 for it.

  • did you get a 54cm in the end rusty?

  • budget would be around 600-800, though that is over a certain time period some i can earn it and pick up parts every week. but obviously if i can do it cheaper then all the better

  • building up a bike from scratch is a slow process if you don't really know what you're doing.. you'll find yourself dithering over whether parts are appropriate for ages and really struggling to ensure that everything fits and works together..

i just did this and it took me 3 months to source all the bits from ebay, on here and bike shops, after spending 2 months before that waiting for a frame that i wanted.. i got some of it wrong which meant that i ended up buying 2 seatposts, the wrong cranks for my bottom bracket etc..

a better route would be to buy an OTP, either 2nd hand or new, and then modify it as you go.. you can probably find a 2nd hand plug or binachi pista and can upgrade everything bit by bit.. then, if you have all the bits as you want them then you can swap out the frame for whatever you like..

this way you;'re up and riding straight away and don't get frustrated as the pile of bike bits in the corner of your living room gradually grows.. and it'll mean you can get up and riding straight away

i dunno - just some advice from recent experience..

edit - and you can sell the bits that you take off the OTP e.g. spank £120 on H+sons rims, sell original plug wheels for £50.. that way everything will work out cheaper too

  • these threads are becoming a fucking daily occurence.

Use the bloody search function, or search with google, it ain't hard, you are just being lazy.

that stuff plus the frame above, then just head to your lbs for the stem bars and saddle/post and your done in a day for about 350

A fair point well made, but surely people tan take a little look round this place, before exclaiming how happy they are that out of the nursery having completely ignored one of the main points of the nursery, which is to have a good look round to see if their question is already answered.

  • 55cm Soma Rush frame.. I know someone who's got an awesome one available..

You've changed. I remember when you were a miserable git, prone to ranting at morons.

  • ^ ha!

  • ED - i have actually been a member for a few weeks and have been looking round the forum, and been reading up. but thought it would be easier for me to have my own thread where i can go to at the click of a button, lazy? i guess so, but still doesn't mean i haven't been appreciating the forum. Thanks to those who have been very helpful, much appreciated.

that sounds like an awesome frame - how much would it cost to buy a frame like that?

  • Dude, no offence like, but you need to go to a bike shop such as Tour De Ville, 14, Cavendish or BLB. Tell em what you want and bang! buy what you like most. All these shops will have excellent stuff.
