  • I know a lot of you on here are photographers, or are into photography, so thought I would ask if any of you have bought gear in the U.S.?

I have the chance to get a Nikon D80 with 18-55mm+55-200mm Lenses and extras like spare battery, bag etc plus delivery for £560, I know this is a good price, but is it worth a punt with the import duty, not seen any deals nearly this good over here?

  • erm. for that money I'd buy a used D200 and a 35mm prime.

depends what you shoot really. if you don't know, then a D80 is a good camera but you could almost certainly get a similar deal in the UK.

your chances of evading tax are about 50:50. not good odds IMO as you'll pay 30% of the value.

  • I've bought from the US and I had to pay duty (although I bought it from Adorama and they are very much "by the book").

Can't you get it delivered to a friend in the US (make sure it is a different state if you want to avoid sales tax) and get them to forward it to you.

  • Fred, send me a link to these deals fella, been looking for 3 or 4 weeks and found nothing to match this deal? To be honest, it's my first personal DSLR, I use the business Canon 350 but it got dropped and is a bit temperamental! Fancy a camera for myself (Have 35mm film camera and a point and shoot for my pocket) as did a lot of photography at Uni but now only seem to take shot of our work for the website? So as I have been asked to do a shoot, thought it a good time to invest. If anyone - Not just Fred - knows of good deals out there, let me know. Cheers.

  • eBay a D80. If you can make sure it's in perfect order, they go for a lot less now that the D90 has come along. I have one and love it! Particularly the fact that most settings can be accessed from the buttons rather than having to go through tedious menus.

  • Cheers Phil, yeah, I have watch lots on ebay, but for the price they are going - about the £450 - 500 mark, I can get this one brand new with the 2 lenses and there is a warranty if anything goes wrong? Contacted a few folk on Gumtree about them too, but they were either sold, or I got no reply? Glad of your review, everything I have read say's it's a great camera.

sales tax is charged in the state of purchase, they fixed the loop-hole, aim for a warehouse in middle America.

Your in London, go to the best Nikon shop in the world, Grays Of Westminster one of the two camera shops I have been too where it is honestly wroth paying for the service.

Fuck buying stuff in the States then.

Isn't that place owned by the Church of Scientology or something?

  • Dollar is getting better, can you wait? The risk of import duty would put me off. If you can get to NY BHPhotoVideo is amazing and cheap as the internet. They stock just about anything and everything and have decent secondhand stock too.

  • Too late, done the deed... I know it's a risk, but I have trawled the internet, looked in every camera shop I have passed and still found nothing. I know it's a good camera and good lenses, looked at a few D200s, but they are more than I have funds for. If I could have gone to NY, I would have checked out BHPhotoVideo, cheers Fox.
