  • i will test ride this one this week:

    it is equipped with a gates carbon drive belt. i think it will last...

  • It been in motorised vehicle's engine for decades of course it will last, unless you've a thousand Chris Hoy in your legs.

  • where is the frame break on the german ones? is it a bolt on track end to the frame?

  • to joshscott187

    i will take my camera with me to the test ride. if they didn't change anything it will be a stainless plate bolted onto the cutted track end to close the rear triangle again, after being opened by them mechanically. evidence pictures will follow.

  • Update from ECMC:

  • Brilliant, my next bike is defintely going to be a belt drive one*

    *when I actually have some money, as well as waiting till they perfect the technology and certain part are readily available).

  • yeah so is mine. i dont see any problems with them, they arnt going to break, they dont need lubing, they arnt going to wear anywhere near as much. yes you need mods or a new bike, but just get a new bike or dont have a belt drive.

    i dont think they have much over chains as none of these problems really apply to any chain bike ive had. but they are lighter and a bit fancy. they probably will be alot more money though which is more likely to put me off more than anything else.

  • the technology is already perfected in the car industry.

    it just a matter of critical mass, where after a certain amount of early adopters has been reached, it will get cheaper and cheaper, and easier and easier to get parts. im probably stating the obvious. sry bout that :)

  • i didnt want to like it, but the pics make me drool

  • I had a strida folding bike and they're belt driven - despite supposedly having a 50,000 mile lifetime I managed to snap two belts in the 6 months I had it...

  • Ha, a Strida hero!

    Some people swear by them, and it's certainly an intriguing concept and they seem to have got better over the years, but there is certainly still a bit of risk associated with component failure. :) I've heard it's not just the belt, but also the hinges and various other fittings. But I'm sure if you only ever go on short hops without luggage and really don't have any space for a bike, it's an interesting purchase ...

    Yours for a tad under £600 from evans, have to say I think they look nicer in the flesh!

  • Would it be possible to have a geared belt drive bike? Initially I thought so, but unless the belt is very laterally stiff, wouldn't a deraileur just push it to one side rather than force it to hop?

    I can't claim any technical knowledge on this point, but I'm interested.

  • Hub gears.

    nope, it doesn't have a fixed wheel, freewheel only.

  • Apparently Lynskey just made the first titanium belt drive bike;

    Even Geekhouse is going beltin'! (built for a customer);

  • And of course, this is where belt drive are going to be beneficial, on a commute/utility bike with internal gear hubs;

    As for the Fixie Inc one, I have a closer look at it and notice the hubs look like a standard flip flop hubs, which mean the belt cog can be screw onto any normal track hubs, if that is the case, then it'd make it so much easier and simplier;

  • hmmmmm, googles small stainless coupling

  • All these additional technical solutions are good. People like choice. In the future, it'll be even harder to decide how many bikes one needs. ;)

  • n+0

  • hmmmmm, googles small stainless coupling

    it would be fantastic if it is possible to just buy those small coupling, easily transform any frame into a belt drive that way.

  • I am tempted to undo the lockring on my District to have a closer look to be honest.

    they must be avilable to purchase, as most of the company's venturing into belt drive are using the same ones.

    Where can I buy them?

    • Consumers should purchase complete bikes, frames manufactured with BTCs™ and accessory items from a local retailer. If your retailer doesn't carry bicycles with BTCs™ and is unable to work with a listed framebuilder, we suggest you contact a framebuilder to locate a retailer in your area. In areas where a framebuilder isn't represented, they may sell to you direct, but there is usually no price advantage. Some framebuilders don't sell through retailers, they only sell direct to consumers. For information regarding whether a framebuilder sells direct or through retailers, see the builder profile for each framebuilder which can be found by clicking on the framebuilder's name on the framebuilder lists..
    • Retrofitting BTCs™ to your existing frame can be arranged through a retailer but it is more commonly done by going direct to a framebuilder.
    • BTCs™ are sold only to professional bicycle framebuilders. We're sorry but couplings are not sold to amateur framebuilders.
    • S and S Machine does not sell bikes or retrofit bikes, we only make the couplings which we sell to professional bicycle framebuilders.
