  • Hi all, afer trawling through a plethora of threads and perusing a million different types of lycra shorts I have to say I am a little bewildered by the choice on offer.

Really, all I want to know is which brands offer the very full padding and which are more sparse. I tend to get pretty sore after 40+ miles, so would be looking for more padding rather than less.

Would be looking to spend about £30-£50. I guess Endura or the Nike shorts seem like the best option at the moment, can anyone speak from padding experience??

    Thanks...

    • cue lots of jokes about lycra - will be wearing them under baggies for the record!
  • just wear all your boxer shorts at the same time.
    much cheaper.

  • Pearl Izumi are pretty good, Evans occasionally will have a sale where you can pick up the better quality stuff at a snip...

The best I've ever used are the rapha ones which are shit off expensive as a rule

  • Search are a good brand. I'd recommend their entry-level Usethefucking's

  • Ha ha, I did search Broker. Just people chatting about selling 3/4 lengths...

  • I recently bought some Endura Hummvee shorts which come with an inner (removable) pair of padded shorts that click into the outer baggies - work great.

  • Thanks Supersonic and Clever Pun, will head off to try some Enduras on I think...

For longer rides you should consider not wearing anything over them. any bulky seams will start to give you bother.

I've got Giordana Tenax Carbon shorts (£60) but I've heard good things about the DHB and Endura ones sold by Wiggle.

  • I use Humvee's, but without the inner shorts.
They're hard wearing and seamless on t'undercarriage.

  • I've got some DHB ones. Have been good for quite a while but the last time used them I experienced chaffing on the edge of the padding. This was after about 60 - 70 miles. Never had the problem before, maybe they are wearing abit. Probably used and washed them about 40 -50 times, each time minimum five hours use. They are cheap though.

    ride naked, its summer

  • ^^ There she is, too many serious answers in one go...

  • assos, cannondale(the carbon ones), adidas (the mid to upper range ones) and giordana.

if you want a long distance chamois then the assos mille is the one to go for they do a cheaper bib that uses the mille pad so if you look at parkers or ribble you should be able to find them, i manage d to get a pair for about £70. the f1uno is alo a good short. if you can't stretch to assos then giordana, nalini and santini are good VFM but i would still stick to the £40-£60 ones as in my experience you really do get what you pay for.

why are you wearing baggies over the top for long rides? they aren't going to help you be comfortable doing 40+ miles.

There's something wrong then. What sort of hurt? Pressure or cutting yourself up?
Probably better off checking your position and saddle and adding a dose of HTFU.

Assos are the best shorts I've used if you insist they are the issue.

Just spotted.. baggies? Fail. They have seams in the wrong places for long rides.

  • dont i remember you describing lycra as 'normal' shorts the other day spags?!

  • giordana tenax bib shorts... really nice pad, not bad price. Think ribble have them for £50.

Did 170 miles over two days this weekend and they held up admirabley.

I'll be doing 1000 miles in them between the 12th and 21st of June. So far they've held out well with my 50-90 mile rides.

I too will be doing 1000 miles in mine come September. I think i will use several pairs though :)

  • I recently got some Giordana Body Clone bibs from parker for £48. They still have a couple of sizes at that price. Really excellent shorts and well worth it if they happen to fit.

I've also got an old pair of Pearl Izumi Attack shorts, which can typically had for 50 notes, and are also excellent and well padded (verging on the extreme, when new it felt like you were wearing a nappy!).

Otherwise, have you looked at the various Santini shorts at Prendas. I was about to order a pair of these (having heard good things about their pad and value-for-money proposition) before i spotted and quickly nabbed the giordanas. E.g.

  • Thanks everyone, appreciate all the help. And the dose of HTFU (courtesy of Hippy)...

  • dont i remember you describing lycra as 'normal' shorts the other day spags?!

I witnessed that too! I nearly fell over!

If you go for some cheaper ones, the red coolmax pads are ok, look for some with those.

If you want nice, pearl izumi or assos

  • I bought a pair of Castelli Velocissimo a month ago.
At £75 I'd say they were mid-priced. They have Castellis new Kiss+ pad, which is basically a slightly thicker version of the highly regarded Kiss pad. The fit is great, and the thicker pad is in no way restrictive. I can highly recommend them, but must admitt that if I had'nt bought a pair of expensive road shoes a couple of months ago, I would have splashed out on some Assos.

  • Rapha, Assos and the new Skins shorts all use cytech pads.

You get what you pay for. Wait for a sale and get a good pair cheap.

When I first started cycling I had a pair of humvee shorts, and I thought they were great. I recently tried them again and the pad was like a lump of cardboard. So maybe I have spoiled my arse with nice bibs and will not be able to make a retrograde change.

  • Assos Mille or Assos F1 - if you want real comfort over great distances plus Assos chamois cream absolute winner don't leave home without it.. these bib shorts are not cheap but will last a long time if you wash them properly and look after them..

  • Buy cheap - buy twice. My old man's motto rings true.
Invest mate - get a good pair of shorts that look after your knackers. :)
