Drivetrain questions

  • Hey,

just wondering what ratio i should be using for a firs time fixer, 44T up front and im not really sure what to have at the back,

also im going to change the BB in my frame as its not sealed, whats a good Sealed BB which isnt to expensive?

I was thinking of getting a Sugino RD chainset, Surly Chainring, EAI rear sprocket, MACK hubs, and this singlespeed chain i bought from KINGCUTTER - would there be any problems with this?

    Cheers,
    will

  • just get a standard shimano BB from your LBS for what i'd expect is like £20. always done the job for me.
as for your ratio, it depends on what you ride, flat city, hills, descents, brakeless/brake, track. and finally how strong your legs are and what you feel comfortable riding. there are too many factors to suggest something.

for me though if i had 44t up front i would go with 17t on the rear. about 69/70 GI and a good odd number of teeth. i personally find that gear inch appropriate for all-round riding.

the setup you are thinking of sounds fine but if you are concerned about your drivetrain that depends also on what width BB you end up getting. and also obviously assuming you have the right size components/chain (1/8th or 3/32)

    my 2p

  • Ah, wow max, thanks, well on my road bike i feel 52T upfront and 19T at back suits me pretty well, i get a bit confuzed about getting the same ratio with lower amount of teeth so any help would be good, im just going to commute on mainly flat and i will be riding with a front brake

  • use sheldon.
he's got all the answers and a handy gear calc.

  • Ah ok 'brows! you guys are so helpful :)

  • I found this much easier to use then Sheldon's calc, I get confused with all the options, so simplicity is best.

  • Thanks CheBeef :)

  • ooh that is good Chebeef...

  • If all your after is the same ratio as 52/19 then find a comination that gives the same ratio ?

    52/19 = 2.74

    44/2.74 = 16.05

so stick a 16T sprocket on there, done :)

  • nice on pilky, i got 175 cranks on my road im getting 170s on my track, do i need to make any adjustments?

  • It has to be said by someone but UTFS ;)

  • I had! im just slightly retarded and just wanted to make sure, no better way than asking :)

  • Well, the information you've garnered here by asking is readily available elsewhere on the forum (via the search function)

Depends on how you define better really..

  • well i had searched for about 10 mins with no luck and wasnt really sure what to input into the search, all i needed for gear ratio was CheBeefs post, but someone else kindly posted what a similar gearing would be, cant people ask for hepl sometimes!? dont bother posting utfs if you dont have anything else to contribute, if you say that at least provide a link, i usually search before posting a topic. . .

  • to be honest with you I wasn't annoyed at you posting your questions but was surprised that no one else had said it first, if I had actually been annoyed I would have gladly supplied you with links..

People can post whatever they want on this forum (including questions that have been answered before). It really makes no difference to me

  • ok fair enough

  • i was running a 44t 16t... 4 skid patches.. not nice.. tyre started to shape like a square, doesn;t make for a smooth ride :S
