  • ditto, getting those stomach pains which could result in me going to grab something like a king size peanut kit kat to stave off the hunger.

it's not that hard amc. you pretty much had one choice from what i saw

  • Why the hell would they make that thing green? It looks shite.

    Save you doing this?

  • you decided yet AMC? we are waiting....

    I'm edging towards the Ridgeback.
With its nice geometry, subdued colour scheme, carbon fork, sensible 25mm tyres and mudguards.
Its the thinking mans fixie :)

  • I'm loving all your expert advice - makes me want to get onboard the fixie ride.

Off to Evans tomorrow for a few test rides but in the meantime a few random thoughts - Evans, don't do the Ridgeback, I quite like the green of the Flyer (although yet to see it in the flesh) and no one seems to have mentioned the Kona Paddy Wagon which my man at my LBS recommended me.

  • Don't go for the 2009 Kona. The frame is not as good as previous years (decent Deddaciai steel frame).

  • I ride a 2009 flyer. It's a lovely ride but embarrassingly green. Insurance replacement for my old (white) flyer though so couldn't do much about it as couldn't find a <=2008 model through the approved supplier...

  • Dude. Embrace the green.

That's a bit of a swizz. I was disappointed when they'd just downgraded from 2006 to 2007 but that was just to a more basic dedacciai tubing; to drop it a notch lower still (no-name "cro-moly") and bump the price up again doesn't seem right.

I still love my 2007 Paddy Wagon, it's going strong after 2.5 years of daily commuting and rides to the coast and I've only had to replace front brake blocks, one sprocket, one chain and the tyres (swapped out the Conti ultra sports straight away).

  • Ed, I know thats why I suggested it...

"...i'm not too bothered about it being 'cool'" Dahons are so uncool but really practical and a great ride.

Good luck doing a winter club ride on a Dahon Uno as the OP suggested he would do

  • Did some test rides at Evans today - they were pretty helpful. Paddy and Charge too heavy, Fuji was too track for me. I kow i'm going to ridiculed for being uber-uncool by i quite liked the Langster Polish.
But the Langster was a 58 at felt too high at the front end and annoying they didn't have a Gensis to test.
I think it is Langster V Genisis - i'll have to get some more test rides in.
My 'perfect' size is a 57 so with a fixed am i better to go down to a 56 or try to lower the front of a 58. Or does geometry make a differnce to that too. Questions questions i know.

  • Nobody going to ridiculed you for liking the langster, after all it is a good tidy bike for the money.

I think it worth waiting until they have a Genesis for you to test, you'd probably feel more comfortable that you've tested them all and don't have any regert in choosing the wrong one.

  • I see nothing wrong with the Langster. If my everyday bike was to completely fuck up for some reason, I would definitely buy one. I've had a good experience with my Specialized road bike.

I like this thread a lot. Going fixed for genuine reason and no signs of riser bars or fluorescent colours either.*

*Edit apart from that gash Genesis Flyer.

The OP only rides the Dahon in the winter or when commuting in the city, now I am on the geared bike but my last long group ride on the fixed Dahon was 60 miles at 18+ mph in april. Last week in London I did about 80 miles in 5 days on it.

The point is that if you set it up right it works just as well as a flash trendy fixie. But the real point is I don't carry 20 lbs of locks and I travel with the thing where ever I go and best of all it gets major laughs - try that with your bike!

AMC - it does not matter what you get if its right for you there are no uncool fixed gear as far as I am concerned, sorry I can't be more helpful with the geometry but my instinct is go with a smaller frame.

    Eat your words - Here's Ed's bike:

  • Eat your words - Here's Ed's bike:

    My fail!

  • Ed - how tall are you - you should get a Dahon??

  • I'm 6'1, it fit me perfectly, I can go faster than Obree with that set-up.

  • I'm 5'11" lets race! Can you get Obree?

  • You do realise this was a bubblebath? and that's not my bike?

  • fails again ~ goes back to hole w/tails between leg and seat post

AMC would you please decide - put me out of my misery...

  • he better buy a fucking bike after all this kerfuffle...

  • I'm definitely sold on the fixed idea. I will get one, you have my anonymous cyber word. But i'm going to find a Genisis to test ride 1st before deciding so it will be a week or so yet

  • As you've all been v helpful to a novice, the least i can do - if anyone is still interested - is let you know my decision cue drumroll.............the Genesis.
Evans are going to have to order it in so should have it in next 2-3 weeks or so. And look like will have to be green as no more white left. In fact chap at Evans said very few left around at all and they are not making it in 2010!
