I think both Yann Black and Lionel's stuff is a bit like marmite, people either love it or hate it.
In my experience Lionel is one of the nicest blokes you could meet: I got an upper-arm/shoulder tat done by him last week and I love it, still healing so no pics at the moment. The process was really chilled - a good chat and then lots of scribbling on paper and then felt-tip on your arm until you're both happy and off he goes. It was all very 'organic' if that makes any sense - about working with space and not cramping things into small areas. Given my only previous other tat was a £50 'standard' design that I picked out of a book and and not custom in any way it was all a bit of a revelation really. I thought I'd struggle to trust anyone to work on me in the way he does but it wasn't the case on the day.
Not sure when he's back in the UK though - I don't think he's travelling as much next year either so it might be a trip to Paris if you want to see him. It'd be worth it though, I may head on over if I can afford it (it's addictive but not cheap).
i've got also a tattoo by lionel, done in january this year, great 6 hours of work, a really nice and interesting guy. but as you've written, love his work or not, the same as the other guys (yann, boucherie moderne, topsiturby)

Yann's in Montreal, he's going to be doing my right sleeve.
Hey Em, Yann is in Brussels this summer. I have an appointment with him on 22nd August. I'm getting the Eurostar over. Road trip!

I love this guys style, but having a tattoo of a character design from an awful film is really bad. I don't like ragging on tats because it's not like you can change parts out like a bike, but this is hell of anti for me.

But if you want a character from a book you are probably going to need to use an image from a film adaptation. However you feel about the film, the book was great and a tattoo isn't "anti" just because someone chose to have the character be identifiable.
Anyway, it's not like it's this:

There's definitely no spaces. Looks like I am going to have to see him in Montréal. -

A friend of an ex used to be in a band. They plugged away trying to make it happen for a few years and it was going nowhere, so he eventually decided that he should get a 'proper' job. So he quits the band and goes to work as an accountant. A month later they get signed.
The band?
Radiohead.
