I think both Yann Black and Lionel's stuff is a bit like marmite, people either love it or hate it.
In my experience Lionel is one of the nicest blokes you could meet: I got an upper-arm/shoulder tat done by him last week and I love it, still healing so no pics at the moment. The process was really chilled - a good chat and then lots of scribbling on paper and then felt-tip on your arm until you're both happy and off he goes. It was all very 'organic' if that makes any sense - about working with space and not cramping things into small areas. Given my only previous other tat was a £50 'standard' design that I picked out of a book and and not custom in any way it was all a bit of a revelation really. I thought I'd struggle to trust anyone to work on me in the way he does but it wasn't the case on the day.
Not sure when he's back in the UK though - I don't think he's travelling as much next year either so it might be a trip to Paris if you want to see him. It'd be worth it though, I may head on over if I can afford it (it's addictive but not cheap).
i've got also a tattoo by lionel, done in january this year, great 6 hours of work, a really nice and interesting guy. but as you've written, love his work or not, the same as the other guys (yann, boucherie moderne, topsiturby)
