  • Must be something about those French speakers, he's a lot like Lionel Out of Step. I'm thinking of getting something by him on my back or thigh.

I think both Yann Black and Lionel's stuff is a bit like marmite, people either love it or hate it.

In my experience Lionel is one of the nicest blokes you could meet: I got an upper-arm/shoulder tat done by him last week and I love it, still healing so no pics at the moment. The process was really chilled - a good chat and then lots of scribbling on paper and then felt-tip on your arm until you're both happy and off he goes. It was all very 'organic' if that makes any sense - about working with space and not cramping things into small areas. Given my only previous other tat was a £50 'standard' design that I picked out of a book and and not custom in any way it was all a bit of a revelation really. I thought I'd struggle to trust anyone to work on me in the way he does but it wasn't the case on the day.

Not sure when he's back in the UK though - I don't think he's travelling as much next year either so it might be a trip to Paris if you want to see him. It'd be worth it though, I may head on over if I can afford it (it's addictive but not cheap).

  • wow. thats awesome.
Yann's in Montreal, he's going to be doing my right sleeve.

  • wow. yann's stuff is absolutely beautiful.

  • Really like these!! This guy Lionels stuff is great!

How much does he charge? His stuff is exactly the kind of style I've been looking for for something I want to get done! Kind of cartoony with a bit of an edge!! Great stuff!

  • It was all a bit 'ad-hoc' and depends where he is etc I think - his stated studio rates as a guest artist down at Nine in Brighton were £110 an hour and I had to put down a £50 deposit. However on the day we just worked around what I wanted, agreed on the final design and then he gave me a price - by the time he'd finished it worked out around £85-90 an hour...

One of my favourites of his:

  • Really great stuff!! I'm planning on getting something inspired by Dick Bruna's Barbara Bear/ Bear but with a few changes to give it a more personal meaning, kind of like this little guy...

I reckon from seeing Lionels work there he'd be able to do something really great with it!

  • got the outline done on my calves the other week... not really cycle specific but with squinting and imagination...maybe

the shading and dotwork is still to be done which will develop the 3d aspect of it all

  • £110 an hour!?!? :-$

  • £110 an hour!?!? :-$

if it's a sort after tattooist yeah I can see that being fair... expensive though

    I pay between 80 & 90 at present..

  • But even the top artists at Frith St, Into U, The Family Business etc only charge £70/80 per hr

  • I know!

But then he's only in the UK for about 5 days a year and got booked solid pretty quickly down at Nine (I got a cancellation and even then that was booking back around New Year!) so it's obviously a case of supply and demand. I thought the final price which worked out at @£85 an hour, not including consultation etc wasn't too bad considering. I'm sure if you went over to his studio in France or caught him at one of the European conventions he'd be a lot cheaper...

  • clever pun, that looks ace! it makes me want to attack you with coloured felt tips tho, and colour all ths bits in! haha.

  • I think at conventions the price is higher... from what I can gather anyway

At the up coming Brighton convention Look out for Meeester OM

Burger and a pint and I might consider it :)

  • Some of these tattoos are simply awesome. But I do wonder what makes some one get some of those bike-related ones on the bike tat blog... I mean, I like the guy with the old chain rings on his arm, but that's because it's a serious pice of work and not a crappy scribble that in some way resembles a bike or company logo.

I'm really glad to read all the props for French Tomas, as that's who I'm hoping to get some leg work done by. But last time I popped in they weren't even taking bookings for him, so I've probably got a serious wait ahead...

he always was very busy and now Xed left there I suspect he's picking up some slack, Xed is over at London Tattoo for a bit and isn't as busy as he was at Into U

Might be worth asking when they open the book up for Thomas again as that'll give you a couple of days to make some bookings

Would love to see a healed pic when it's done!

I'm really into red and black, and I love what he does with the slightly offset shadows. I'm not in the UK at the moment so I'd probably try and catch him on his travels, or visit him at home. but I'll have to wait until I've earned some money, so I've got plenty (no, really - plenty) of time to decide what I want done.

I'm definitely in the "love" camp. But then I have the world's most hated chest-piece. I'm still very fond of it - 3 years after having it finished - although I've had to get used to lots of "who scribbled on your chest?" and "yes, I mean, I wouldn't have it done myself, but it's very... uh... different. "

  • Would love to see a healed pic when it's done!

Bepanthen seems to be doing a better job than Savlon did on my other tattoo - seems like fantastic stuff. Got to take a heap of pics for Lionel anyhow, under strict instructions!

Talked about this but he suggested not having it done on mine as it can look a little 'stamped' - depends on the design I guess. I think when he's next in the UK I'll have some more work added to it (have to save up first!) - as you may be able to tell I'd thoroughly recommend him...

  • yeah....but why would you?

Love both of their work. Can't wait to get my piece done by Yann.

Belly's work (Paris) is worth checking out too.

  • Anyone seen Farid's fixed magazine issue3 inspired Pentabike tat? Looks good.
