SPD shoes

  • i have recently started using my spd's again after not doing for a year, my shoes are really cheap ones from decathlon and when walking there is no rubber on the bottom and you walk directly on the cleat, is anyone selling any size 10 better ones? i dont mind if there not that good because its more to decide if im gonna stay with spd's or not

also they have some that seem ok at aldi for £20 how importamt is it to have a really good shoe?
cheers for any help anyone who rides clipless alot may have for me

  • I used to use Specialised road SPD-SLs before I got a fixed, they are really comfortable for riding but rubbish for walking as they also have exposed cleats.

My current SPDs - Sidi MTB shoes are really good for walking about in but I can feel some flex in the sole compared to the SLss, nothing to worry about for short-medium distances but longer and I can feel it.

I think it's just a trade off: comfy, super stiff but exposed cleats or walkable and not so stiff. I guess the cheaper the shoe the less support there may be in the sole. £20 sounds like a bargain but it took me a while before I found a shoe that fitted like a slipper, which is what you need if you're putting the miles in or have them on your feet all day. I can wear my Sidis all day no problem and can walk around town OKish and they don't look too geeky.

  • i ride sidis also, they are a good compromoise with comfort and stifness but i bought them back when they were £109, which i think is worth it. but they have been inflated to £140 now which is too much.

apparently there are some dhb mtb shoes from wiggle for about £40 which are really good. they look a bit shit but they perform well by all accounts.

  • I had some lidl SPD shoes once. They were a cheap copy of a specialized model. They were really good and lasted me a good 18 months of use. However when i first screwed the cleats in the back plates threads stripped immediately, absolute crap. I'd bought cleats that came with backplates, so just whiped up the innersole, and swapped them over and then no issues.
