First time build advice

  • I'm planning on building a new bike and have no experience in bike building at all. i am looking to spend £800 (or less). I started looking at frames and components and was wondering if there is a general rule for how much should be spent on the frame vs the wheels and other components. also are there any recommendations on steel track frames, i like the look of the bob jackson Vigorelli Track
    Thanks
    J

  • PM Pistanator.

  • If you have £800 I would spend £200-£250 on wheels and £300-£350 on a frame.

  • don't forget to pm asm too, he got quite a lots of aerospoke that he can sell for £50 for you.

  • thanks for the responses, £50 sounds really good! do you know if they're clincher?
Also iv come up against the steel vs aluminium question

  • Focus on the frame, chainset and wheels.

  • Maybe go to a shop and ask them to build for you?
you can choose the parts from the shop.

  • they clincher, just pm 'asm' for one, don't forget to specific what colour you want it in, 700c and clincher.

    :)

  • asm does have a blue **aerospoke **going for £180.00!
a little cosmetic flaking but still rideable!
(ill post it on his behalf)

  • I've been eyeing up an off-the-peg Bob Jackson frame as a replacement. Not bad for £345.
I'd check ebay for Mercian frames. I got an '81 with reasonable paint for about £100. No track ends though.

  • £800 is a lot to spend on your first bike! What happened to being thrifty eh?

    Thanks zep!

Its not really my first bike, i'm hoping to upgrade from a giant bowery, im now thinking of just upgrading the components (ie spend a little less)
Thanks for the advice everybody! some very helpful stuff!

  • Just upgrade the frame, and spend a little bit on changing the component, you'd save probably half of £800 on that, unless you like the ride of the Bowery thought (nothing wrong with that).

  • Looking at the Bowery (what year is it?) I think the frame is the best bit. Get some nice wheels and chainset and you'll have a great bike for well less than 800 quid.

  • I have to admit that i like how the bowery feels, i've had two sets of faulty forks from giant so they're kindly replacing them with composites.

I think the frame is the best bit

Now i just need to buy components, which wheels would you recommend? would learning to build them myself be a bad idea?

How much is that in dorrah?
