If you wanna go for something cheaper, year 2000 Marin's are nice. I have an old Marin which I have SS, It a bit of a mismash because it is my beater, but nonetheless I throughly rate Year 2000ish Steel Framed Marins.
They ride bloody lovely, and pretty fast on and off road.
