Integrated headset... dunno what will fit!

Posted on
  • I've got a frame that I'm building up at the minute. It is a Chance T1 which is exactly like this frame...I'm guessing they are probably the same:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28794

I haven't got a clue what kind of integrated headset will fit in it. It takes a 1 1/8th fork by the way. Somebody has built a Pro-lite frame up on here so maybe they will know. My work internet connection is being well shit and won't let me look at images so I can't find out who has it.

    Any ideas?

    cheers

  • find a 1 1/8th integrated headset
    fsa do them
    most bmx companies do them

  • I have got a 1 1/8 on my BMX. FSA for all your headset needs. Or, just ring the bike shop. They will know.

  • Ved has a pro lite, Pm him up for information

  • i got a united bike co one for my cutter
    works fine
    was 15 quid
    cant complain really

  • after a little search, i found that the headset for the pro-lite is:
    1-1/8" threadless with a 41.8mm-OD 45x45 degree, steel cup/caged-bearing system (1/8"-upper/lower) and a 30.0mm-ID crown race

  • I took an FSA integrated headset to the shop with the frame and they rang today saying that it doesn't fit. He didn't have any in the shop that fitted but they don't stock many. I'm in London this weekend so I might just pop into a few shops until I get one that fits. Can someone suggest a good shop that will have a load of headsets I can try? I'm in the North so preferably them ways. Cheers for the help anyway lads.

  • just spoke to the distributors of the frame and they said that any sold as frame only (like I bought) were prototypes and they used different headsets on different prototypes. He also said that they made their own headsets to fit them. I said that he would have used stock headsets or stock-sizes at least so that people could replace them. He didn't have a fucking clue to be honest so couldn't tell me what size headset they used...suppose I will just have to trawl through shops with the frame. hopefully the one hovis brown said they use on the pro-lites will be the one.

  • another little update!...just went to shorter rochford in potters bar (nice little shop but quite well equipped and nice staff). They didn't have any headsets that fitted. They said that the diameter is well off 1 inch and 1 1/8th inch. I'm gonna try a couple more shops tomorrow but it isn't looking good att the minute. They mentioned that I my have to get another headset bored down or get some bearings made to size. Has anyone had any experience with frames that have a headset size that isn't normal? Has anyone ever had to get a headset made or at least the bearings for them? They suggested Middlesex Reboring in Mill Hill but I suppose I can use somewhere up north when I go home. This is proof that getting a bargain can sometimes be too good to be true.

  • is it bigger than 1 1/8" ?

if it really is custom sized then I know Chris King make custom headsets.
    but it'll be costly!

edit: I know how you feel.
The Ti bike I got for a mega bargain turned out to be a massive hassle as no headset looked like it would fit.
but eventually I found one that did, even though it meant I had to get a converter from 1" threaded Shimano 105 to 1" threadless.

Thats might be what you need.

I just looked at what other people who owned the bike used. And that one came up most.

  • Sunday I went to BLB and shop 14 but no luck. The lads in shop 14 were very helpful though even though I didn't buy anything. They seemed confident that the integrated headset by Fly Bikes would work so I might look into that. There is no info on their site regarding sizes and angles so I don't know. I finally got a response from the Chance manufacturers. They said that the part they used (don't know if it was used on my sample frame though) is a cane creek compatible headset VP-A46ACK:

    http://www.vpcomponents.com/headset.asp?pcat=&pcat2=11&nowPage=2&pagesize=5#

I can't find anyone supplying this in the UK cos I think it is used by brands as a cheap version of the cane creeks. Does anyone know what cane creek headset is the same?

Can someone look at the specs for this headset and let me know which pro lite one has the same specs. I'm thinking that the second one down on here will work (as suggested above by Rosmal):

    http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP5651.aspx

The diameter of the VP one is 28.6/41/30 and the pro-lite is 30.2/41. Assuming they have the same angles (45/36 i think cane creek is)..is there not much difference in these? I prefer the sound of the pro-lite ones.

Does the VP one have the same specs as this:

Sorry about the questions and that but it's really pissing me off now! Any help would be well good. Cheers

  • then details of the prolite ones are odd. Have a look at chainreaction they have all the dimensions of headsets also park tools website has a section on all the different types of integrated headsets. You just need one that is cane creek or IS. I have an fsa one that has been good, i hope this helps.

  • The important number when buying integrated headsets is the stack height.

  • I got the second one down on this list:
    http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP5651.aspx

...and the bike shop has managed to get the bottom bearing in but he can't get the top one in. He said it is too wide and he couldn't even use tools to get it in. Is the relevant size the one that is 41.8? I think this is 41.8 so would I need a smaller one like 41.2 or is there any smaller than that aswell? Is it the ID or OD size I should be looking into? He has bored all of the paint out of the top of the headtube but said he would not be happy boring any more of it out cos the metal would be too thin. It's getting stupid now how long this is taking so any help would be great. Cheers

  • Yo Joey... Ive only just seen this epic thread about your nightmare with finding a headset for that frame. It just so happens I have that very same frame yet mine came with a headset in place. All i can say is that it seems to be made by ambrosio and looks like the top one in this link

    http://www.ambrosio.co.uk/ambrosio_headsets.htm

Ive never had to take it out so am only going on the design on the top. Worth checking out perhaps.

  • [Hijack] Numpty question, but I've never installed an integrated headset before. I am pretty sure I can tell the order of installation, just wondered if anyone could offer any concrete insructions. my googlings not helping today. FSA IS 2

  • second illustration, possibly >

    thanks!

Spent ages on there never found anything but claimed weights and marketing BS.

Althougth there seems to be a split ring (3 compression ring) missing. I assume this goes between the crown race and the lower bearings.
