  • I took my Pinarello to the bike shop - I had put the shifters on the wrong way around - and I had hooked up 26mm bars with a 26.4mm stem - they laugh at me everytime I go there now

  • I decided to switch out all the brake and gear cables on a winter commuter a couple of years ago. Having never done it before, I assumed it was like wiring electric's, ie you cut through the housing and kinda feel when to stop so as not to cut the cable inside. After destroying all my new cables, and a couple of the old ones I had tried to reinstall in desperation. I gave up and drove to a bike shop to pick up some more. The look on the guys face, when I explained everything, was classic. I dont go there anymore.

I reckon any feckwit could make the same mistake. But it takers a special type of feckwit like me to make it 5 or 6 times in a row :)

Anyway, despite my inability to reconise my own mistakes, my first outing on the fixed I have built up, was a 55km trip along coastal roads.

I found it to be a nice intro into fixed riding (nice and quite). Although I convinced myself that every sound my bike made was a warning that the wheels are about to implode.

  • Everyone has said everything useful already. I am now redundant. Commence decommissioning.

  • Any fule can survive 50 miles, fixed or not. But if it's a new build you want to be sure that your arse can stand 50 miles on a saddle it isn't used to. After about 30 miles my Charge Spoon started giving me real problems and I now make sure I've got a woolly hat to stuff under my butt. First 50 I did I could hardly walk afterwards on account or Sore Butt Syndrome. Saving for a rolls right now!

  • 50 miles is a nice afternoon cruise around londons famous london !

  • I'd probably want to do a shorter ride before hand to test it out, just in case it either falls apart or I've got my position set up wrong.

Fitness wise, if you can ride 50miles geared, you can do it fixed. I'd recommend a front brake

  • thanks for all the comments, constructive, and not...
i plan to just man up and do it, i did 50 miles last year on a FS MTB, how much harder can this be?

i have done a test run around the block and nothing has fallen off. yet.

  • have fun

  • Shouldn't you be scaling some mountain? Packed?

Not harder at all because this time you'll be cycling a bike rather than a pogo stick ;)

    Good luck and enjoy it

I actually did 50 miles on a pogo stick once. For shits and giggles. Felt nowt.

  • A brand new Brooks saddle and some tight jeans you'll be fine.

  • this is new and I thought would be most appropriate for this thread
