you will find it hard to get a good cotter pin chainset, may i surgest something abit more moden (1970's) like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAMPAGNOLO-RECORD-STRADA-170mm-CHAINSET-VG-COND-c-1970s_W0QQitemZ250426946278QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item250426946278&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
you would need a bottom bracket to suit and the whole lot would be under £50 -

might i suggest
williams
chater lea
search the bay for either of these they are the most desirable and probably what he secretly wants. the chater lea are more expensive than the williams generally. both have rings that can be removed. stronglight also made a very attractive steel chainset. also try sending a pm to hilarystone on this forum. good luck
lastly
this is rough but rechoming it to look like new would cost about 68.00

this last one has already sold but i have included it so that you have a reference point and can become more comfortable in the knowledge that they do exist.

Thanks to everyone, this is fantastic and gives him (and probably me as I'm curious now!) some great pointers.
Cheers again to everyone and if anyone else has some tips they're welcome!!

I have a Williams chain ring and a Stronglight crankset for grabs if you want it.
You can have it for exactly what I paid for it - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=150340388069 and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=150340382228
I no longer need it. Drop me a PM. I'm going to be out of the country from Wednesday morning, so, you can meet on Tuesday evening, in central, near Drury lane, or, wait until the 24th or later if you want it.
Thanks :)
Ali.

If you're in london's famous london go see rob at sargent and co. he'll be able to sort you out no worries
'lo all
My housemates Dad is going to be 90 (hurray) and is a die hard cycling fanatic. For his birthday he wants a good cottered chainset to put on one of his old touring bikes, something neither me or my housemate know anything about being young 'uns and knowing zip about older components and where to buy them. It'll be a geared tourer which I realise isn't the forum's speciality but I've seen a few people discussing cottered cranks but no-one discussing where they buy them (have used the search facility so not guilty of a search fail!)
Does anyone know where you can get decent components? I googled 'cottered chainsets' but seemed to get a load of £5-£10 results, and his Dad knows his bikes so he'll want something that isn't made out of tin!
Cheers!
Riki
