screw the kitchen, couldn't you just keep the gaggia (or ranilio) on your desk? Or in a big drawer, Or maybe in a filing cabinet, which you could lock.
I have to say, having my own machine has pretty much ruined coffee for me as the costabucks espresso is really not doing it for me any more.
