(Is this bamboo really strong enough to use? I have seen old traditional mallets with bamboo shafts but do you think that it will really last a game? )

Otto, I have a bamboo mallet that some Berlin players brought over for Shoreditch tourney last year and left at my house. It's been sat out in my garden most of this time, used a couple times. I've put a new head on it and Ali (Los Coños) used it throughout the Oxford tourney, Gabes used it in a game and I used it the other night at Mitch, so yea I reckon Bamboo is strong enough. The question is whether or not we can source Bamboo in the UK that's strong enough?
Andy, that's £6/pole, 3 mallets per pole. So you've put yourself down for 9 mallets worth of bamboo...
Bill, I'll search around for single 16/18mm canes. That price is quoted for 50 3meter canes (under 20mm they're no longer poles but called canes). Or we may need to put that one off unless there's more interest.

@mike,it's got to be strong enough. The same material is used for horse polo mallets.
i might be able to find a decent source. i know of someone who makes/fixes them. -

Out of interest does anyone have any experience drilling or cutting bamboo?
IIRC from my childhood it's easy to split and hard to drill?

cutting should be fine, i wouldn't drill it. you'd have to glue it.

5 x 3meter poles at 20/25mm diameter (like mine) = £30 (2 quid per meter/mallet)
or
50 x 3meter canes at 16/18mm diameter (similiar to ski poles) = £42 (app. £.30 per meter/mallet)
As for 'wicked high quality' bamboo. I can't seem to find any UK suppliers that grades their bamboo. Apparently there is a big difference in grades and it comes down to silica in the soil which shows itself as brown dots in a cross-section of pole.
Wicked List:
