On 1st August 1999, new legislation came into force to allow a fixed penalty notice to be served on anyone who is guilty of cycling on a footway. However the Home Office issued guidance on how the new legislation should be applied, indicating that they should only be used where a cyclist is riding in a manner that may endanger others.

In Australia you can cycle on a footpath provided you are under 12 or you are escorting someone who is under 12.

i was riding on the pavement once in wimbledon passed a middle aged woman she starts screaming GET OFF THE PAVEMENT,then smashes me over the head with her empty tartan shopping trolley

thanks for that, it's good to know in the events I sometimes feel it necessary to use the sidewalk. in those cases I always go very slowly and yield to pedestrians.

i could easily do this kind of short cut on my commute (Outer Circle / footbridge over canal) near US Ambassador's Residence , instead i ride to gated exit by Avenue Road, traffic light junction..
Why? because I am a road user, and partly because it doesn't take that much longer to ride 'round...
this morning I saw a group in jackets which read 'community payback' painting railings on the Outer Circle (running track area).. probably caught RLJ, riding over footbridges or some such offences..

i had a man chase me in camden as i rolled over the corner of the pavement to roll through the lights with the peds, he came at me like he was scaring birds from a field full of crops, fucking nut ball! he never got close but i did get a good chance to watch this odd creature and laugh at his expense. i ended it by looking him square in the eye and telling him he really need to get laid! you could almost hear the penny drop!
Worst bit was he was about 10 meters away and ran out of his wat to me!?
if i see people riding on the pavements when i am walking i make it as hard as i can for them to get past and point out if they are scared to cycle on the road maybe they should walk. not one person has come back at me yet, which i find odd. i guess they know they are in the wrong?!

I got stopped by this CPO (radio with no batteries) a few months ago for cycling on the path (that looks like the road) next to the serpentine. gave him my details and had to spell the word "blue" for him as he was writing my appearance up.. which about summed it up
-

Greasy, you now have us wondering what part of you was blue, other than your mood at the time. My money is on your nails.

His shorts. The top was white. Wearing his Spurs kit with pride.

I can't believe they are doing people for RLJ in regents park. The last friggin thing I'm going to do 8 laps in to a 10 lap burst is stop at those b'stard reds on the downhill or the little bridge.

I has something similar happen to me nr Evershot street, crossing the Euston road. I was heading north, peds where crossing Eustons road and I wanted to turn right, I rode diagonally towards the ped crossing over the yellow box junction and jumped off my bike to walk on the edge of the junction, after about 3 steps I felt someone pushing my back, Turned round to find a rotund gentleman on the floor screaming at my that I had nearly run into someone (which I hadn't). He'd fallen onto the floor trying to push me over. I couldn't help but laugh. Attacking cyclist fail.

I am getting pretty militant as a pedestrian, I regularly get in the way of people that ride on pavements and point out that its against the law.
I even pushed one off, he clipped my arm as he rode past on the pavement, got a bit of a wobble on so I caught up with him and helped him down to the pavement.
I have toyed with the idea of carrying a bolas to thrown in their back wheels.

Where are you walking? The only time I see people cycling on footpaths is kids out in the 'burbs.

My personal pet hate of the moment are the free-wheeling fucktards who think it is ok to fly down the Grenwich foot tunnel because they are balanced on one pedal. Sorry but it says no cycling in the tunnel and in my opinion that still counts... Plus being fixed-wheel means I can't do it so you shouldn't be able to either! ;)

Interesting, but still not proper police - PCSOs are the plastic ones.
Do any proper plods still ride bikes at all in Great Britain?
LOL My mate was pissed one night, got spoken to by plastic bobbies, got leary and said "Pffft!! You're not a real policeman, are you."
Bloke calmly said "I am a real policeman. This is a real truncheon. And you're really going to find it stuck up your fucking arse if you carry on like that son..."
PWNED!!!

How the police will fight you with their bike.
That is without doubt the funniest thing I have seen this week. What I love is the officer has dropped their batton on the floor to try and fight with the bike!
So maybe at the next G20 we'll be faced with a police line waving shitty MTBs around. Brilliant!!

I've never really had to deal with cycle plods before(except for watching a pair have their bikes nicked from right beside them by the local n.e.ds while telling off their mates) and was just wondering if anyone had committed an 'offense' of any nature and been chased by the law? Presumably their comedy mtbs wouldn't catch any but the fattest of road/fg riders? May have to get a bike up to full legal road spec - tons of reflectors etc and go pick a race. New sport? Everyone bring £30 for the fixed penalty/winnings and the first back to the pub wins the pot, busted people already have their fine money ready.

That used to annoy me a bit when I used to use the Greenwich foot tunnel. Some sort of petty 'I can get away with this cos its technically not cycling' loop hole whereas you'd have far more control over your bike if you were just riding it normally. Pisses the peds off for sure. The Woolwich foot tunnel has barriers up every 60ish feet now.

just a suggestion

That fucks me right off. I'll push when it's busy and ride slowly when it's not, these barrier don't stop people cycling they just slow everyone up. I never even used to see that many people cycling along that tunnel even when I commuted through it.
