Nigel Dean was a Pro rider (from the Isle of Man) in the 70/80's and famed for his crapping in a racing in a racing cap while riding on the bike in a race- source Tony Gowland (TG). Other thn that he was gutsy rider.
I'd suggest, as was the fashion in those days, that the frame was made by somone else and stickered up with his name, although the design may have been his, as was the componentry too.
Bob Jackson and a few others (eg Merlin) did make their own frames.
(Pat Rohan frames certainly weren't made by him, or anyone in his employ until much later.... ie Ron Thomas, off the peg frames were bought in, made to measue were built by Edwardes, many other shops did the same at the time eg Mal Rees, Don Farrell, Bird's cycles, Also - a respray would have the shop's name on the frame unless you specfied and paid otherwise for it).
Its still a piece of history no matter what though.

Nigel dean had a small shop (which continued as a cooperative after he retired), and has been mentioned by one source (online) as building frames for other marques.
The frames were distributed through Ron Kitching (of Milremo fame) in the early 1990s.
What you say is correct though - as a rule.

• #13
I want Campa c record crank. Is it still available?
-
• #14
Happy buyer, happy seller! :-D Enjoy Switzerland mate.
I've had a couple of PMs about the cranks and will probably list the cranks seperately tomorrow, it's getting messy.
Buyer sensibly opted for the Athena (bottom on corkboard), so Chorus (175mm - on bike) and C-Record (170mm - top on corkboard) are available, and a couple more... ha!

Are the retrofriction shifters still for sale, or did they go with the bike as an upgrade? I'd be very interested in 'em.

Tom Board built the frames for Pat Hanlon....Pat was a she...not a he!......and the crapping in hat thing was mentioned in Fotheringham's biog of Tom Simpson.

Hello everybody.
I'm selling a bike I built-up for an ex-colleague. My ex-workplace started cycle to work so this is ex-cess to requirements.
ALBUM on photobucket.
Lots of care and attention went into the build, lots of autosol and a few months.
Nigel Dean is a little-known builder who retired from racing and setup shop from mid 1980s till 1992. This is a 1991 Winter frameset. He is better known for his 'Tour Ace' touring model, and many still see service today. There are some examples of race frames, but his marque was no factory.
Nigel Dean winter training frameset. Mudguards clearances.
Seat Tube 55.5cm c-c
Top Tube 56.5cm c-c
Reynolds 525 Triathlon (replacement for 531)
This was used for 2 winters back in the early 90s and put away since.
When I got this it had a lot of dirt and surface rust and chips. It has been extensively re-touched, especially around BB shell, chainstay bridge, and under fork crown. To be brutal the frameset doesn't quite do justice to the parts, but from 4 meters away it looks great!
Campagnolo Chorus 1st generation cranks with Brev. chrome dust caps and Campagnolo chainring bolts and chainrings (52-42)
Campagnolo Athena Pedals with large toeclips and Christophe straps (new)
Campagnolo Record indexed 7/8 speed downtube shifters. These are worth around £50-60, HilaryStone sold a NOS pair on ebay for £145 recently.
Campagnolo Athena hubs 36/36 laced to Mavic MA40 clinchers, front rim anodising has started to wear through. Old Chengshin skinwall tyres.
Campagnolo Athena 1st generation brakes with white cable adjusters, original chromed Campagnolo brake block holders. (Replacement rubers at SJS). Front allen bolt is rounded off. Pitting to chromes bolts.
Shimano 105 1st generation brake levers with white hoods. (Replacement black hoods at Ribble)
Cinelli Giro D'Italia bars (42cm); Cinelli Milano old logo stem (scratches from flipping the bike have been polished out.)
Hatta Vesta chromed headset; Selcof alloy seatpost (27.0mm)
NOS Selle Italia Turbo Speciale saddle. NOS Italian handlebar tape.
New brake cables / outers and gear cables.
Spare Sachs-Maillard 7-speed freewheel, this one is clicky, the silent one is on the bike.
All bearing have been adjusted and in some cases stripped completely and regreased. Indexing works well and test rides are welcome.
I am looking for around £300. Less if I know you.
Following adjustments can be made and corresponding changes to price (-/+) :
Bontrager saddle -£20
Simplex retrofriction shifters -£40
MKS quill pedals with Christophe M clips -£10
Campagnolo Athena Chainset -£15
Campagnolo C-Record Chainset (with FREE 7mm allen key!) +£45
Eagle-eyed bike-nerds will notice the lack of cable ferrules and slightly loose cabling. This is so you can take all the parts and put them on another frame without hassle (except the front brake!). I can trim and cap if buyer prefers.
Stem and Seatpost are pictured at maximum extension.
Anything I've missed or questions please ask.
